jfk jr.’s last night alive (thursday, july 15, 1999). “that night, after john had gotten his cast removed, john and gary ginsberg went together to the yankees game. the pair were driven by car service to yankee stadium to attend an interleague night game between the yankees and the atlanta braves. ginsberg had also invited to the game james and lachlan murdoch, rupert's two sons. they all sat together in the box of george steinbrenner, the yankees' owner. part of the idea was to have john meet the murdoch sons to see if there might be some interest in news corporation replacing hachette as john's partner for george. george was not the only topic of conversation that evening. gary recalled, "it was not a good last night for john. i think his most immediate concern was "what do i do with george?" it was an unsettling period. there were a lot of unknowns in his personal and professional life. but what he was talking about that night was running for governor against pataki. there was a lot of uncertainty. he didn't want to get divorced. he was a sticker, not someone who looked to get out of things. he looked at his sister's marriage and saw how happy it was and wanted the same for himself. so i'm thinking, in a perfect world, it all works out". in the long car ride to and from the stadium, gary talked with john about his political ambitions. john mentioned that he was eyeing the new york governor's race in 2002. "that's the race", john told gary. he had stopped brooding over the senate seat that hillary clinton had moved to claim. "i'm intellectually and temperamentally better suited to be an executive than a legislator," he said. "my dad didn't like it, either", he revealed, referring to his father's time in the house and the senate. john felt he could beat incumbent george pataki, a bland moderate republican who was seeking a third term. john realized that he had to get his house in order before he could make the move. He worried whether carolyn would ever be emotionally capable of dealing with him running for office. and then there was george, which was hanging like a dark shadow over his future ambitions. "he was looking for a graceful way out of george", ginsberg recalled. the yankees lost to the atlanta braves that night, 6-2, and after the game john and gary shared a car home. gary recalled they spoke about john's dealings with jack kliger. john confessed that after kliger said he was cutting george loose, john had felt both depressed and liberated — depressed because he hadn't expected kliger's decision, liberated because now the worst had happened and he knew he would survive it. he had felt uncomfortable with kliger, john admitted. he had a problem with male authority figures. gary pointed out that that was understandable, given that john's father was a national hero. john also admitted that he'd been thinking about death a lot lately.. anthony radziwill's sickness was weighing on him. instead of going to his loft in lower manhattan, john instructed the driver to head south on fifth avenue. he would be staying at the stanhope hotel, at 81st and fifth. he told gary that he had lost his keys. john returned to the stanhope, arriving shortly after 1:00 a.m. "he was limping uneasily on his crutches and in obvious pain", said jeffrey jones, the hotel's night clerk.”
