When Brad Pitt walked onto the set of Friends in November 2001 for Season 8, Episode 9 ("The One with the Thanksgiving Rumor"), he was arguably the biggest film star on the planet. Fresh off global box-office smashes like Fight Club (1999), Snatch (2000), and Ocean's Eleven (2001), Pitt’s standard film quote sat comfortably at $17.5 million to $20 million per movie. Yet, to guest-star alongside his then-wife Jennifer Aniston on network television, Pitt bypassed commercial compensation entirely and accepted only SAG minimum.

Alan Cumming had one problem with his GoldenEye character: He couldn’t twirl a pen. And the director wanted Boris to do it constantly. Cumming even asked if they could change it. His friend told him: “It is the crux of the entire plot. You have to learn this.” So he trained with a magician until he mastered the trick. Then came the twist. The pen they used on set was Bond’s exploding pen and its different shape threw off everything he’d practiced. So Cumming had to relearn the trick with the actual prop. And that tiny detail became one of Boris’ most memorable traits. Because the pen wasn’t just a character quirk. Three clicks armed it. Four seconds later… BOOM.

Zack Snyder might be one of the most misunderstood filmmakers in Hollywood. The man turned Superman into a god among men, gave us one of the most visually striking comic book films ever made with 300, and delivered a four-hour superhero epic with Zack Snyder’s Justice League. His films are instantly recognizable. The slow-motion shots. The mythological imagery. The operatic soundtracks. The larger-than-life heroes who feel like gods walking among ordinary people. You can dislike his storytelling choices, but dismissing his visual style and ambition is another thing entirely.
