The feast of St. John Paul II is celebrated on October 22 because it marks the anniversary of the inauguration of his pontificate in 1978. On October 22, 1978, he celebrated the Mass inaugurating his ministry as Pope, delivering his famous appeal to the world: “Be not afraid! Open wide the doors for Christ!” He was elected Pope on October 16, 1978, but the Church chose October 22 as his liturgical memorial to commemorate the beginning of his papal ministry. St. John Paul II was canonized by Pope Francis on April 27, 2014, Divine Mercy Sunday. 🙏 October 22 is therefore a day to remember his extraordinary pontificate and his call to the world to open its heart to Christ.

🙏 Pope Leo XIV has announced that he will undergo surgery in the coming days. Speaking after the Angelus, the Holy Father shared a personal health update, revealing that doctors had discovered a small, localized nodule in one of his lungs during recent medical examinations. The nodule was detected at a very early stage, and doctors have recommended its removal. “I have decided to undergo surgery to have it removed, following their advice,” the Pope explained, adding that the procedure has already been scheduled for the coming days. The Holy Father concluded by expressing his gratitude for the spiritual support of the faithful and asking for their prayers. 🙏 Let us keep Pope Leo XIV in our prayers as he prepares for surgery, asking the Lord to guide his medical team and grant him a smooth recovery.

Pope Leo XIV held his first meeting with Dame Sarah Mullally, the new Archbishop of Canterbury and the first woman to lead the Church of England and the Anglican Communion. During their audience at the Vatican, the Pope encouraged Catholics and Anglicans to continue the path of dialogue and unity, acknowledging that new challenges have made full communion more difficult. He warned that it would be a “scandal” not only to fail in the common mission of making Christ known, but also to stop working to overcome divisions, “no matter how intractable they may appear.”

At today's General Audience, Pope Leo XIV reflected on Sacrosanctum Concilium, the Second Vatican Council’s constitution on the sacred liturgy, and urged priests to respect the texts and norms of the Mass. The Holy Father reminded priests not to alter the liturgy “on their own initiative,” warning that such changes can create confusion among the faithful.

Saint Agatha was solemnly crowned today in Catania by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Pontifical Legate of Pope Leo XIV, as the city celebrates 900 years since the return of her relics. On August 17, 1126, the relics of the third-century virgin and martyr returned to Catania (in Sicily) from Constantinople. Nine centuries later, that historic homecoming was commemorated with a 7.5 km pilgrimage through the city to Piazza Duomo. There, Saint Agatha’s skull was presented to the faithful before being placed inside her magnificent reliquary bust, while her other relics were returned to the silver reliquary casket. Cardinal Parolin then performed the solemn coronation of Catania’s beloved patroness. 900 years later, Catania still welcomes Saint Agatha home: “Cittadini, viva Sant’Agata!” 📹: fabiusaderno (IG) x Crux Stationalis - Jacob Stein

With visible emotion, Pope Leo XIV closes the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica—the last one still open—marking the end of the Jubilee of Hope 2025. In remarks to journalists in Castel Gandolfo, a reporter asked Pope Leo XIV why he had not prayed “at least not visibly” during his visit to the Sultan Ahmed Mosque in Istanbul. The Pope smiled and replied: “Who said that I didn’t pray? … And perhaps I am praying even now.” He then clarified: “In fact, I prefer to pray in a Catholic church, in the presence of the Most Blessed Sacrament,” calling the attention given to that moment “a bit… curious.”

The Borso d’Este Bible, one of the supreme masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance, was formally presented to Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican during an institutional ceremony attended by the President of the Italian Senate, Ignazio La Russa. The encounter took on a particularly touching note when Pope Leo gently reached for the manuscript, carefully asking whether gloves were required and if he might turn its pages. Reassured that the precious volume could be handled, the Pope leafed through the codex with evident reverence, observing various Bible passages and illuminations. Commissioned in the 15th century by Borso d’Este, Duke of Ferrara, the lavishly illuminated Bible—celebrated for its gold embellishments and Afghan lapis lazuli miniatures—stands as a pinnacle of European manuscript art, uniting exceptional artistic refinement, historical significance, and profound spiritual symbolism. It is rarely displayed outside its permanent home at the Estense Library in Modena.

In a candid moment, Pope Leo blessed the traditional Armenian offering of bread and salt—and, after asking the Armenian Patriarch Sahak II if he should eat the piece, he did. This was the first event of his fourth and final day in Türkiye (Turkey): a prayer visit to the Armenian Apostolic Cathedral, where he was welcomed with the customary gift of bread and salt. In Armenian tradition, bread symbolizes life and God’s generous blessing, while salt represents purity, loyalty, incorruptibility, and faithful relationships. To “eat salt and bread together” means to seal a bond of lasting trust and peace. In Armenian spirituality, this call to hospitality is rooted in Abraham welcoming the three angels, the Gospel invitation to receive Christ in every stranger, and the monastic tradition of caring for pilgrims.
