28 years ago today.... Ethiopian Flight 961 hijacked, ran out of fuel, and ditched in the Indian Ocean near Comoros. 125 died out of 175, including the hijackers. First wide-body ditching. The pilot fought to save everyone right to the end. Have hijacking risks really disappeared or just changed form? Would modern security have prevented this?

On some domestic flights in China, flight attendants keep pitching products the whole time. Not all routes, but certain airlines still do it. Super annoying for passengers and exhausting for the crew. Never seen anyone buy anything. They should just leave duty-free brochures... people can check them quietly and buy if they want. Much better.

Operations are now stabilising, and travel is gradually returning to normal, but it's unclear if passengers have regained the confidence to return. That might take some time.

The fire on engine #1 was catastrophic.. an uncontained failure that sent debris flying uncontrollably... but the real killer was the immediate compressor stall on #2, visible right here in the footage as that telltale puff of flame. This almost certainly resulted from Foreign Object Debris (FOD) ingestion, where fragments from #1's explosion were sucked into #2's intake, disrupting airflow and surging the compressor blades. Watch the sudden yaw to the left post-stall: that's the asymmetric thrust kicking in, with only engine #3 (tail-mounted) left producing power. For a fully loaded MD-11 like UPS Flight 2976, heavy with cargo and fuel for its route, climbing out on a single engine was impossible.. performance data shows these birds need at least two for safe ascent under max takeoff weight.Pilots did everything by the book; ATC audio suggests they declared emergency instantly. No procedural tweak could've changed this outcome. RIP to the three lost on board, thoughts with the injured ground personnel.

Australia is retiring its entire fleet of 10 C-27J Spartans after just 11 years in service. The RAAF announced it as part of the new 2026 National Defence Strategy... the planes will be replaced by commercial aircraft for moving people and cargo around the Pacific. No specific type picked yet, though something like an ATR 72 has been floated. Some of the tactical stuff will shift over to the bigger C-130J Hercules fleet, which Australia is expanding. The Spartans had ongoing headaches with maintenance, spare parts, availability rates, and high costs (partly tied to the U.S. FMS process). They never quite hit the mark for battlefield airlift the way they were originally intended. On the flip side, they were really good at humanitarian work... landing on short or rough strips during bushfires and floods where bigger planes couldn’t go. It’s basically a rethink: instead of one versatile but pricey platform, split the jobs between heavy military transports and cheaper civilian options for routine regional support. Makes sense on paper for saving money, but it’s a shame to see them go so soon.

Most airports don’t allow cleaning the windshield like that, and even airlines have rules against it since someone could end up slipping and getting hurt. Plus, you can’t do it on the Boeing 787 or A350 anyway... their windows don’t open.

Space Shuttle Columbia on STS-1, the very first Shuttle mission, coming in hot over Rogers Dry Lake at Edwards Air Force Base. You see the chase planes, the perfect unpowered approach, wheels kissing Runway 23, and that massive dust cloud as it rolls out. Then the crew... John Young and Robert Crippen... stepping out after 54 hours and 36 orbits in space. This wasn’t just another rocket flight. Columbia proved the Shuttle could launch like a rocket, orbit like a spacecraft, and land like an airplane. Reusable hardware, real test pilots at the controls… it changed everything.The beginning of the Shuttle era in all its glory.

Using the thrust reverser of an A350 to reverse the aircraft would be the first time I have seen this. 2 May 2026, Shanghai Airport. Why did he use the thrust reverser twice? Why not just set the brake after the first time?

Turns out you can actually ride an open-top double-decker bus at Narita Airport and go straight into the non-public restricted area to watch planes!! You also get off to take photos and climb the Ramp Central Tower for a full 360° view of the airport. 2 hours for ¥13,000, only on a few specific days . This is absolute heaven for plane nerds~
