“It’s just a lucky pass.” Nah, it’s just a player who’s comfortable passing with every part of his foot.

Sells the fake shot with his arms, stomps & drags the ball back… then rolls it forward. Nothing will ever beat technique.

Unreal dummy from Havertz, lovely finish from Ødegaard, but Calafiori’s run shouldn’t go unnoticed. Acts as a decoy, not only preventing Neto from doubling up on Tzolis, but also dragging Lacroix out to clear up space.

Stay on your toes. Stay “spring-loaded.” Light and reactive, quicker first step, better lateral push, cleaner adjustments. Heels cost you split seconds you can’t afford in 1v1s.

Was this a mistake from Heaven, or great timing from Mbaye? He’s aware of the danger but the left-foot step he took to anticipate Boly’s run makes intercepting the cross hard. Mbaye times his acceleration right after the scan & on that left-foot step.

Rayan Cherki being extremely annoying, as always. Sneaks out of Scott’s cover, faces forward as he receives, then the little shove at the shoulder to fend off pressure from behind. Not enough for the ref to call a foul, enough to protect the ball.

Might be a bit harsh here, but Gravenberch’s inability to consistently play these passes is limiting Liverpool. When carrying isn’t an option (even though it was in this sequence), his passing range lets him down.

Loved this duel from both sides. •Trev stays low, on his toes + side-on (most of the time), reacting well to Doku, eventually blocking the effort. •Doku drives at Trev’s hips, forces him back, then pulls his signature twitch the moment Trev goes square.

I can watch this on repeat all night.

Manchester United’s 3rd goal was my favorite of the night. •Sesko’s (underrated) technical ability to separate & link play. •Mbeumo’s movement & touches to separate & freeze his marker and set up the shot. •Amad’s run to support & give Mbeumo more time.

Mbappe with an unreal finish for France, but the work before it is equally brilliant for me. Olise & Dembele maintaining quick tempo, especially Dembouz with the 1st touch pass. Gives Bergvall no time to react and Gyok no time to close Mbappe down.

Bring me this. (From h’s The Overlap Breakdown.)

1 minute was all it took for Galatasaray to expose Liverpool’s OOP setup. No reliable pressure = more time on the ball → more midfield movement to drag the CMs + LW moving inside. Find the free man and you’re good to slip passes through the high line.

Marmoush keeps his eyes on the ball the entire time. Kossounou doesn’t, and that’s why Egypt go 1–0 up. He makes an outside run to pull the defender wide, reads the pass then the moment he sees the CB take his eyes off the ball, he steps inside.

Jones’ shot was probably the 1st time this Liverpool trio got that close together. Ekitike with the double movement to separate & receive before flicking the ball. Wirtz passing on the run with his left, & Jones with the deep run to arrive into space.

The movement from Sesko for both his goals was top. •1st goal: Comes around his marker and attacks the blind side of the CB. •2nd goal: slight change of direction to lose his marker and cut in front to meet the cross. He’ll be good for us.

Look, I’m probably nitpicking here, but if Romero doesn’t slow down, doesn’t he at least make it harder for Minteh to finish?

Japan using diagonality & associative play in the final 3rd. Active wide triangles to tilt the block & outplay the 3v3s before finding the inside passes. However, players made the same runs & didn’t arrive in space. Countermovements could be key.

Both of Liverpool goals were a result of great disguise, ball protection & half-turn reception from the players. Wirtz a common factor in both too. His decision making (find Gakpo instead of Macca,) rhythm shifts & movement to receive were all key.

Is there anything more unpredictable than being able to pass with every part of your foot?

Trey Nyoni with 5 little movements to receive on his marker’s blindside. Now you see him, now you don’t.

Kobbie Mainoo leading to United’s penalty: •Slows down to bait the press, ups his rhythm to bypass it. •Dinked touch against incoming pressure to “slip” through the gate. •Diagonal touch before the pass affects Diop & gives Cunha enough separation.

Japan are at it again. •Decoy run to create space & time. •Regress to Progress + Thinking Diagonally. •Shadow play, pass & move and playing in different rhythms within the 2v2. •Blindside movement to receive between the gates/to infiltrate the box.

Protects the ball with his arms and body, rides contact with great balance, and still finds the control to sell that subtle feint before shifting inside. That last chop… I have no words for that.

The acceleration & top speed from Sesko here, someone needs to clock that! Then the deceleration & footwork to open his body. Planted foot towards the far post and ankle locked to guide the ball across. Deserved goal that!

I know going 1v1 vs Summerville is never easy. But Dalot, my guy… we’ve got to work on them toes a bit more.

Can you disguise AND perform your action in one motion? Can you bait your opponent AND give them no time to react? Can you shift your own rhythm in a split second?

The build-up to Bruno’s record-tying assist was brilliant. Changes of tempo from direct vertical passes into one-touch small-space play. Mainoo’s detail within that combo is great. Extra touch, draws defenders in for more space, then dinks it through.

Lacey disguising AND performing his action in one motion. Give the incoming defender no time to “settle.”

Elliott Anderson “stunned” 3 City players with that outside-foot pass. Body orientation facing wide influencing: • Foden not closing the center. • Nunes pushing onto the LB. • Dias holding instead of closing CHO. Turned a 3v3 into a 2v1 in his favor.

Lamine Yamal with another example of winning the “duel before the duel.” He reads Burn expecting the run in behind (no pressure on the ball), so he fakes it with a sidestep to create more separation. Ball manipulation after is another topic.

Manchester United have this issue of not recognizing/allowing threatening situations to develop in the final 3rd. Execution (decision & timing) remains an issue, but so does the lack of synergy in movement, maintaining tempo & recognizing the best option.

Another Arsenal game, another goal scored from their wide play. •Mosquera does well slowing the play down and timing his pass to find Eze. •Calafiori with the movement to influence Kamara before attacking the gate.

Liverpool were cut through by Como on different occasions, mainly through the central free man. Players are still struggling with their pressing angles & timing to force wide or trap inside, therefore getting caught between the phases (from zonal to m2m.)

Bruno & Cunha as double 10s is forcing Fulham’s CBs to jump into midfield. There’s an opportunity to make it 3v3 on their last line. Issue is, Dalot is the only I see making those runs from deep. Also, we’re too static. We need more countermovement.

Two chances Wirtz was involved in: 1st: Like the quoted example, he disguises the pass perfectly, influencing Gueye & Tarkowski before releasing. 2nd: Double movement to lose Branthwaite, stays in Garner’s blindside, & allows Salah to “breach the gate.”
