Just before 6 a.m. Thursday, the FDNY received a call for smoke coming from a building at 3435 Dekalb Avenue in the Bronx. Upon arrival, units discovered fire on the sixth floor of the building and in the cockloft. "When we arrived, we had a rapidly extending fire in that cockloft. Members cut the roof, started getting hoselines in place and operating," Deputy Assistant Chief Paul Miller said. "The building had blown-in insulation, which tends to hold the heat and smoke in." Additionally, two vehicles were parked on hydrants in front of the fire building, which delayed responding units in getting water on the fire. Seventy-five units, totaling about 225 fire and EMS members, responded to the 4-alarm fire. Four people suffered minor injuries—two firefighters and two civilians. The fire was placed under control at 10:40 a.m. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Just before 12:30 Monday afternoon, the FDNY responded to a 4-alarm fire at 44-49 College Point Boulevard in Queens. Tragically, four people lost their lives in this fire. Two other victims were transported to area hospitals in critical condition. During operations, a stairwell collapsed, trapping two of our members. They were transported to area hospitals in stable condition. More than 230 firefighters and EMS personnel responded. “This is a difficult and tragic day. There were several victims in this fire. The Fire Department did an extraordinary job under difficult circumstances, putting this fire out and saving people. I can't thank them enough for their continued efforts and commitment to life safety,” said Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore. “Upon arrival, we had heavy fire on all three floors of this building. There was a victim trapped on the second floor, which our members removed with a portable ladder. As our engine companies were moving in from the first floor and up the stairs to the second floor, the stairs collapsed, and those two members were trapped in the stairs. With additional help, we were able to extricate those members. As all that is happening, other members are performing CPR on the victims in the street,” said Chief of Fire Operations Kevin Woods. The fire was placed under control just before 2:45 p.m. FDNY Fire Marshals are working to determine the cause of the fire.

On September 11, 2001, FDNY members from Ladder Company 6 were helping Josephine Harris down Stairwell B in the North Tower when the building collapsed around them. Trapped beneath the rubble for hours, Josephine, six firefighters and a Port Authority police officer survived. What began as a rescue that day became a lifelong bond. Josephine remained close with the members of Ladder 6 until she died in 2011. The same firefighters carried her one last time as pallbearers at her funeral. On Tuesday, Josephine's family returned the green firehouse jacket she was given from Ladder 6 members following 9/11. Four of the six members who helped rescue Josephine 25 years ago were there to accept the jacket. Now, it will remain as a permanent reminder of a life saved, a bond shared, and the promise to Never Forget.

After more than 52 years of service, Lt. Roy David is retiring from the FDNY on Monday. From the blackout of 1977 to the Happy Land Fire, the first World Trade Center bombing and the attacks on September 11th, Lt. David has spent more than five decades answering the call and caring for New Yorkers. A mentor to generations of EMS members—including his son, who is an FDNY EMT—his knowledge, dedication and integrity have left an enduring mark on the Department. Thank you, Lt. David, for 52 years of extraordinary service.

At approximately 6:20 p.m. Tuesday, FDNY members assigned to the Robotics Unit and EMS rescued two swimmers in distress off Rockaway Beach at Beach 85th Street just 20 minutes after lifeguards had gone off duty. While patrolling the shoreline with a drone, Firefighter Michael Stothers spotted the swimmers struggling in the water and, within minutes, successfully deployed a Restube flotation device from the drone. The flotation device began to inflate as soon as it hit the water and helped both swimmers remain afloat until rescuers arrived. EMT Michael Ormiston, of Station 47, entered the water with a rescue torpedo and made contact with one victim, while Firefighter Patrick O'Leary assisted in bringing the individual safely to shore. An off-duty lifeguard assisted with the rescue of the second swimmer. Both patients were transported to an area hospital in stable condition. ⚠️ As more New Yorkers head to the beach this summer, the FDNY reminds residents to swim only when lifeguards are on duty, follow the posted safety signs and to stay alert to changing water conditions.

Riches joined the department in 2006, following the path of his father, retired Deputy Chief James Riches, and three brothers, including Firefighter Jimmy Riches, who made the Supreme Sacrifice on September 11, 2001, just a day shy of his 30th birthday.

After more than 40 years with the FDNY, Ladder 149 Capt. Ciro Napolitano worked his final tour Wednesday before retirement. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Capt. Napolitano joined the FDNY on Aug. 2, 1986. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 1996 and then to captain in 2002. He has been the captain of Ladder 149 since July 2019. The FDNY thanks Capt. After more than 40 years with the FDNY, Ladder 149 Capt. Ciro Napolitano worked his final tour Wednesday before retirement. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Capt. Napolitano joined the FDNY on Aug. 2, 1986. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 1996 and then to captain in 2002. He has been the captain of Ladder 149 since July 2019. The FDNY thanks Capt. Napolitano for his more than four decades of dedicated service to New York City. Here's to a happy and healthy retirement!

ARRESTED FOR ARSON🚨 FDNY Fire Marshals have arrested 21-year-old Dominick Sacchetti in connection with a fire at a Staten Island ShopRite on November 26th. Sacchetti was an employee of the supermarket. After reviewing surveillance footage, Fire Marshals say Sacchetti started the fire on a product shelf containing paper goods. The fire spread quickly causing an expected $100,000 in damages. At the time of the fire, the store was packed with shoppers preparing for the Thanksgiving holiday. A fast-acting customer helped to briefly knock down the fire using a fire extinguisher. FDNY units arrived promptly and fully extinguished the fire. Sacchetti has been charged with arson, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and intent to damage property.
