At 3:48 p.m. Thursday, the FDNY responded to reports of a fire at 485 Scott Avenue in Brooklyn. Upon arrival, units encountered heavy fire and smoke inside a two-story recycling plant. "This was an extremely difficult fire because of the extreme heat today," Assistant Chief David Simms said. Ten firefighters suffered non-life-threatening injuries, mostly related to the heat. The fire reached a third-alarm assignment, and 192 fire and EMS personnel responded. The fire was placed under control at 6:40 p.m., and the cause remains under investigation.

“At 6:00 this morning the Fire Department was alerted to a report of a fire at 2086 Anthony Avenue. We arrived to find heavy fire in two buildings and very quickly transmitted a 2nd alarm. It eventually became a 3rd alarm, bringing more than 40 fire and EMS units and 150 fire and EMS personnel to the scene. We had fire throughout two buildings, and unfortunately, we did have two fatalities,” said Chief of Department John Esposito. “We did unfortunately have a car parked on the closest fire hydrant. We’ve seen that now a couple of times in the last week throughout the City. We all know that we should not be parking on fire hydrants and when you park on fire hydrants, it slows us down. Just before 12:30 Monday afternoon, the FDNY responded to a 4-alarm fire at 44-49 College Point Boulevard in Queens. Tragically, four people lost their lives in this fire. Two other victims were transported to area hospitals in critical condition. During operations, a stairwell collapsed, trapping two of our members. They were transported to area hospitals in stable condition. More than 230 firefighters and EMS personnel responded. “This is a difficult and tragic day. There were several victims in this fire. The Fire Department did an extraordinary job under difficult circumstances, putting this fire out and saving people. I can't thank them enough for their continued efforts and commitment to life safety,” said Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore. “Upon arrival, we had heavy fire on all three floors of this building. There was a victim trapped on the second floor, which our members removed with a portable ladder. As our engine companies were moving in from the first floor and up the stairs to the second floor, the stairs collapsed, and those two members were trapped in the stairs. With additional help, we were able to extricate those members. As all that is happening, other members are performing CPR on the victims in the street,” said Chief of Fire Operations Kevin Woods. The fire was placed under control just before 2:45 p.m. FDNY Fire Marshals are working to determine the cause of the fire.

Thursday, FDNY members, family, and friends gathered for a walkout ceremony honoring Probationary Firefighter Christopher Dorato of Engine 167, who was released from Staten Island University Hospital North. FF Dorato was seriously injured on January 31st while operating at a third-alarm fire on Staten Island, sustaining a severe leg injury. Since then, he has undergone five surgeries and continues to show incredible strength and resilience. We thank the dedicated staff at SIUH for their outstanding care and support.

Units arrived in approximately four minutes and encountered heavy fire on the second floor, attic, and through the roof, with minor extension to the adjoining building at 40-37 Gleane Street. “Upon arrival, we found heavy fire on the second floor, attic, and through the roof,” said Deputy Chief Jeffrey Meister. “There was a slight extension to the exposure building on the right.” All occupants were able to safely evacuate the building prior to the unit's arrival. Four Firefighters sustained minor injuries during operations and were transported to local hospitals. FDNY Fire Marshals are investigating the cause of the fire.

At approximately 6:20 p.m. Tuesday, FDNY members assigned to the Robotics Unit and EMS rescued two swimmers in distress off Rockaway Beach at Beach 85th Street just 20 minutes after lifeguards had gone off duty. While patrolling the shoreline with a drone, Firefighter Michael Stothers spotted the swimmers struggling in the water and, within minutes, successfully deployed a Restube flotation device from the drone. The flotation device began to inflate as soon as it hit the water and helped both swimmers remain afloat until rescuers arrived. EMT Michael Ormiston, of Station 47, entered the water with a rescue torpedo and made contact with one victim, while Firefighter Patrick O'Leary assisted in bringing the individual safely to shore. An off-duty lifeguard assisted with the rescue of the second swimmer. Both patients were transported to an area hospital in stable condition. ⚠️ As more New Yorkers head to the beach this summer, the FDNY reminds residents to swim only when lifeguards are on duty, follow the posted safety signs and to stay alert to changing water conditions.

After more than 40 years with the FDNY, Ladder 149 Capt. Ciro Napolitano worked his final tour Wednesday before retirement. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Capt. Napolitano joined the FDNY on Aug. 2, 1986. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 1996 and then to captain in 2002. He has been the captain of Ladder 149 since July 2019. The FDNY thanks Capt. Napolitano for his more than four decades of dedicated service to New York City. Here's to a happy and healthy retirement!

A fast-acting customer helped to briefly knock down the fire using a fire extinguisher. FDNY units arrived promptly and fully extinguished the fire. Sacchetti has been charged with arson, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and intent to damage property.

As they prepare to join the ranks of New York City's Bravest after graduation, they do so with a deeper understanding of the legacy they now carry and our enduring promise to Never Forget.
