I do not think that many Yoruba people understand how the hitherto 'balanced' media spaces are changing rapidly such that the most prominent voices in podcasts & talk radio can easily push ideas that are considered 'modern' because they push for a post Yoruba Lagos.

For those who are not old enough, everything that Pat Utomi built his media presence on & constantly regurgitated with members of 'The Patito's Gang' TV show are the policies that the current president is carrying out. Here is a video from just 10 years ago of Professor Utomi. You can search the web for more media materials to know what he built his reputation on. This new found love for populist political talking point is something we would expect from a Dino - not any member of Patito's gang. But such is their nature of our politics, that our principles are not as important as our access to political power.

Marriage is about the family first before the church.

Yoruba is also tonal language with every word ending in viral sounds. Some dialects are spoken as if you are singing. That is why it has always been a preferred choice for singing by most people - even those who are not Yorubas. Christy Essien was not Yoruba but her biggest musical legacy is a Yoruba song 'Seun Rere'. It is a musical language with a family of drums, including one that mimics the language's tonality. What you call Yoruba tax is a blessing from God to the Yorubas & those who are ready to partake of it.

This was Professor Pat Utomi from an interview 10 years ago. Much of the things he had advocated for over the years, that many governments before now failed to implement because of the political consequences, are now being implemented by this government. Today, he sis against the very person with the 'political will' to make those reforms.

Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, narrating how Governor Tinubu headhunted him from Morgan Stanley in the US, illustrates how Lagos has been deliberate about the quality of minds that contribute to its continuous growth & development. There are lessons here for those who will learn.

"...Nnamdi Azikwe did not ask for any pastor. Obafemi Awolowo did not ask for any pastor. It is this generation. The traditional churches did not ask for any pastor. It is we Pentecostals that have started this wahala of pastor. No catholic is calling pope..." -Pastor Poju Oyemade

Gele & crabology. The moment the now viral intro 'I am gonna marry a Nigerian & you are going to wear a gele to my wedding' became a thing, those who felt their culture wasn't highlighted in that expression were always going to come for the gele. It is either they co-own it with the original owners or discredit its cultural identity. The same pattern plays out when the phrase 'Yoruba tax' is invented to play down the musical excellence of Yoruba creatives as acts of nepotism. This is elementary crabology. You can't have elements of your culture at the center of global attention & theirs is not there. The gele must become ichafu by force.

The period you were accepting an appointment from Abacha was when he ordered the assassination of Kudirat Abiola. Like her, many of those you attempt to ridicule lost their lives or went into exile while you fed fat on Abacha's port appointment. You can't rewite this history.

Yorubas need more young people like this, who understand that pandering in the face of organized hate is not our best interest as a people. If you need to reduce yourself for others to feel good about themselves, you will always less than you are meant to be.
