Toto Wolff reveals he and Lewis Hamilton stopped speaking for weeks after Nico Rosberg won the 2016 title, made his rule with his wife Susie their rule, and admits Hamilton later had to remind him of it “There was a moment when we had a really difficult time in 2016, after Nico won the race and the championship, and we didn’t talk to each other for a few weeks. And then he came to my home because I said, we have to talk. And we spent many hours and we came out of this discussion, it was before the Christmas party, so strong. That was the foundation of our friendship and relationship in the years to come." "But what I said to him is, we cannot not speak to each other. If there’s something that annoys us, you just have to pick up the phone. You have to tell me and I’ll promise to do the same, because the rule with Susie is, if there’s something that makes us angry, we talk about it before we switch the light off in the evening. We don’t let it drag into the next day." "And a year or two passed and we had a situation that annoyed me and I didn’t call him, and he called me and said, ‘Remember what you said to me. We have to speak to each other.’ And I said, ‘You’re so absolutely right.’ So he reminded me of what I said to him.”

Ben Affleck says meeting Delta operators taught him the most elite fighters are not the biggest or toughest guys but the relaxed ones who don't get tight and can problem solve in a crisis "There's been less than 900 guys ever in the history of Delta. You meet them and they're not the biggest guys, they're not the toughest guys, they're not trying to fucking be hard, and, you know, they're the most relaxed, at ease." "I found myself just being like, finally I was like, what can I just ask, what do you think makes somebody like qualify for the Delta Force? Like, what's a good Delta operator? It's like, 'You know, problem solving.' Problem solving? The guy goes, 'Yeah, it's probably like your job.'" "I was like, 'No, let me tell you something. No, it isn't. It's really not like my job. I appreciate it. Very big fucking difference.' He's like, 'Yeah, you solve problems.' Again, no one's trying to kill me." "See, that's the thing. But that was the closest insight I got to it, which was, I've always kind of thought this about like a guy's like, like Brady or something. There's guys that just don't get tight, and that they are kind of able to problem solve when the problem is like, well, that helicopter's crashed and we're 200 miles inside Afghanistan and we're outnumbered fucking six to one. How do you think we should get home?"

Jalen Brunson reveals that at 13 one line from Bob Hurley Sr. showed him his father’s pushing was never personal, and explains why he turns any coach yelling to find his breaking point into a positive message “Yeah, there was one, it was not necessarily on the court, actually. There was a moment when I was about 13 years old. I was at a tournament or something where I met Bobby Hurley Sr, and I mean, he’s a legend, obviously, and I was with my dad." "And I don’t remember if it’s coincidence or it happened, but I just remember it happened. And my dad was never my coach on a team, but he was always, like, my trainer and my mentor, father, obviously, but he always was pushing me on the court." "And Coach Hurley said, just know when your dad’s being a dad and when he’s being a coach. And I think that made me realize that whatever was happening on the court was never personal. Just wanted the best for me." "And so in high school and college, I had these coaches trying to, like, just always yelling. Yeah, just trying to, like, push me, trying to see, like, where my breaking point was. And I realized I had a dad who pushed me to the limit. And so no matter what is said or going on, I will always find a way to kind of take the message, right? And then turn it into something positive, regardless of how it’s being said or whatever, in the moment or whatever. That was a big moment for me.”

Christian Horner says Red Bull’s car evolved around Max Verstappen’s abnormal ability to handle an unstable rear, leaving other drivers unable to cope “Max is tremendously demanding for what he wants, and he has a skill that is abnormal. He demands more and more front end from the car, and he can just cope with whatever the rear does. “In pursuit of that goal, to give him that tool, inevitably your engineering department, your tools, your development focus goes down the route of creating that characteristic in a car, which others found difficult to handle. “Some of these drivers were arriving too soon, and I didn’t completely agree with the speed at which they were arriving into Red Bull Racing. “I think Alex was too soon. I think Gasly was too soon. I think Lawson was too soon. These guys needed more time to evolve and develop. Look how long George Russell had in a difficult Williams before getting that call-up. They’re more rounded by the time they arrive.”

Billy Crystal reveals that at 8:45 on a Monday morning, about to send the obituary he had written for his manager of 45 years, an unknown number rang and it was his longtime makeup artist Bill Farley calling to say goodbye from hospice "So I wrote as best I could, funny, intimate, good stories, something where I felt really good about it. It's 8:45 Monday morning. I'm doing this. Do I press send? Do I press send?" "I'm just about to do, the phone rings. I don't recognize the area code. About to press, rings again. I go, 'Somebody's trying to reach me.' I say, 'Hello?' And the person tells me who it is. One of my really close friends, great guy named Bill Farley." "Bill was on my makeup and hair team for every movie that I did, and a hilarious, wonderful guy. I mean, a really close friend. 'I'm going into hospice. I have maybe a week. I just wanted to say goodbye. What a great life we've had together. I've enjoyed working with you so much. Is Janice there?' She hears his voice. 'Hey, Janice.' 'Bill.' 'Just want to say goodbye.'" "And then the last thing he said was, 'When I see you again, I'll give you a trim.' And he hung up, and I press send."

Mark Normand admits comedy is mostly failure, and reveals that when he complained to Seinfeld about how much explaining crowds needed, Seinfeld told him packaging an idea so people can absorb it is literally the craft "Sadly, it's mostly failure. Comedy is mostly failure. If you're doing it at a high level, it's a lot of failure, you know. Just like trying a new joke, bombs. Get a tough crowd. You have a heckle, you try to get the heckler and your line sucked. You know, it's just a lot of failing." "I think learning it is just doing it. That's the only way to learn, is to do. That is, like, I yelled at, I didn't yell, but I was talking to Seinfeld once, and I was like, 'That annoys me how these crowds, they get weirded out by this and that. I just want them to understand. I just want them to get what I'm talking about. I have to do so much explaining.'" "And he's like, 'Yeah, that's what we're doing here. That's literally the craft of what comedy is, is figuring out an idea and packaging it to where people can absorb it.' I just want them to get my jokes, but you still have to make them get it."

Ben Affleck says losing his parents taught him that resentment and petty disputes waste your life, while unresolved relationships never repair themselves with time “One of the lessons for me was, at the end of life, what isn’t remembered or valued and just doesn’t matter is all the stupid little shit. Whatever it is—the internecine thing, the work conflict, the petty dispute, the shit we get involved in with ourselves, the little resentments, the time you spent being offended—that shit is just a waste of time. “As much as you can let it go, I think that’s so clearly the way to try to live. If you don’t do it, if you don’t fix it, if you don’t resolve it, it’s not just going to happen with time.”

Brad Pitt says every instinct in an F1 car tells you to lift off the gas, but that sends you off the track, so you need to trust the car "The first time I got in, I just could not believe you could take corners at these speeds and the car would stick." "Every impulse is to get off the gas. But you do that, you destabilize, and they actually will, you'll go wide. Then you'll go off the track. So, you actually need to stay on it." "They say if you're not on the gas or you're not on the brake, you're not driving the car and you're upsetting the car." "So it was that, I just kept saying, 'Trust the car. Trust the car.' I like had this mantra going in my head. This is like week one. Trust the car. Trust the car. And then the braking capabilities are shocking."

Toto Wolff credits Lewis Hamilton with teaching him that leaders are not the end product, and says that if you actively seek to change a wrong way of acting, you will change “It’s something I learned from Lewis Hamilton, our driver. He has such a sense for perfection in a way that there is a constant feedback loop within him. How can I improve? Every single day." "And we know that you can never achieve perfection because also your targets change. But he’s an adult, and he’s taught me that contrary to what we think, we are not the end product." "We think, okay, we have strengths and weaknesses. We have our personality. This is how we act. We are either tyrants in our organization, or we have an embracing kind of style." "And he taught me that if you realize that you have taken the wrong decisions or maybe that you have acted in the wrong way, change. And if you’re actively seeking to change, you will change. So when it comes to the leadership style, the adaptability is a moment where I had to change.”

Christian Horner reveals his respect for Lewis Hamilton rose after Abu Dhabi 2021 because Hamilton congratulated Red Bull despite feeling “absolutely robbed” “Any Lewis Hamilton fan was feeling absolutely robbed. I have to say, full credit to Lewis afterwards because, in what must have been a horrendous moment for him, he held it together. “He shook Max’s hand. He shook my hand. He congratulated us, and so did his father, in what must have been an incredibly difficult moment for him. My respect for him elevated at that point in time. “Then, of course, you’re into a discussion with stewards and barristers and whatever else. But it was inevitable that it created a narrative, and it’s very easy for the people who feel wronged to lean into that and build a narrative.”
