![In these Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) videos, IBD Dende, the most notorious smuggler in the South West, can be seen threatening to kill a Customs officer who seized his smuggled goods. The officer he would have harmed had he not been restrained is an Assistant Superintendent of Customs. Some puzzling points about these videos: 1.Despite wielding guns, all the Customs officers in the footage can be seen pacifying Dende. Why? Same trigger-happy Customs? "All the Customs officers with guns you see in those videos are his boys," one source told FIJ. 2.Dende can also be seen bragging: “Ejigbunu is the one I called.” “Ejigbunu bring it [the smuggled goods] in. ‘Ejigbunu’ here is Hussein Ejigbunu, Comptroller, Federal Operations Unit Zone A. FIJ previously highlighted his role in the smuggling of unchecked items, including terrorist bicycles and tramadol, into northern Nigeria. 3. Dende can be seen ordering the receiver at the other end of the phone: “Call Wale, call Wale.” The said 'Wale' is Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, a Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) and current Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC)! 4. Dende questioned the Customs officer for not stopping their bosses’ trailers of rice being smuggled in from Seme. Good evening, NIGERIA CUSTOMS. I am aware that your officers have colluded with smugglers to move well over 130,000kg of rice from Benin Republic into Nigeria tonight, Sunday November 11, 2024. All is set. Your men, working with Adeyemi Habeeb Abdulganiy, the multi billionaire-smuggler better known as Abuga, are primed to pass more than 2,000 cars containing at least 65 bags of rice each from Bebe in Benin Republic into Sango, Nigeria. Some of these cars will enter Sango from the toll gate by driving against traffic, consequently endangering lives, while some will gain entry into Sango through Ifo; others will use the Oju-Ore-Ota route. Road users in Sango can expect traffic congestion early tomorrow morning unless this post prompts an about-face from the actors. I understand as well that soldiers from the 192 battalion at Owode will be patrolling during the journey to prevent any resistance. So, NIGERIA CUSTOMS, just so you know, the people are watching; they will be hysterically laughing at you when you announce "seizure of one million bags of rice and 25 cartons of guns" later his week.😁

Good morning, CustomsNG. I’m writing to congratulate you on finally successfully smuggling over 2,000 cars containing over 6,500,000kg of rice into the country in trickles through Badagry, with the major act happening from Saturday night into the early hours of Sunday morning. The two videos appended below are a part of a larger set recorded at various times between 2:30am and 4am on Sunday, evidence of the flow of rice vehicles through Badagry. After a certain Customs checkpoint, more than 60 cars parked at a particular spot were noticeable. Elsewhere, at a filling station, more than 50 cars with rice were also spotted. Many more drove into the country with unfettered access, all eventually easing their way through Customs checkpoints without hassle. Many of those cars passed through Ijanikin, Mowo, Aradagun, Oko-Afo, Agbara and Ibereko, some slowing down around the bridge to Festac and others continuing on to other routes. Congratulations once again and continue aiding and abetting the very crime you were created to tackle!

Good afternoon, NIGERIA CUSTOMS. In this Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) video are 600 cartons of chicken and turkey, smuggled into Lagos last night by ‘Sunday Ibadan’ (pictured), IBD Dende’s right hand man, after securing the nod of Hussein Ejigbunu, Comptroller, Federal Operations Unit Zone A — a man whose media footprints is littered with announcements of smuggled goods intercepted by the Nigeria Customs Service. Can you now see why I’ve repeatedly said all those publicly-announced seizures are goods belonging to smugglers who didn’t pay the right people in Customs? Specifically, these chicken and turkey cartons smuggled to Lagos overnight were loaded onto Toyota Avalon vehicles at Ohunbe and driven to Papa, for onward movement into Lagos. The cartons are ‘just’ 600 because of the discreetness necessitated by my recent writings; just two months ago, this would have been up to 10,000 bags per day. Anyway, Nigerians like to know: when will you stop misleading the public with PR and propaganda, bandying humongous IGR figures about, when the biggest smugglers are in cahoots with your most senior officers?

Good morning, CustomsNG. The three men you see in this video were involved in alerting your men to the smuggled rice and petrol seized by your men overnight last Tuesday to Wednesday in Oja-Odan. Can you then explain how the identities of these men who tipped you off about the crime became known to smugglers, consequently earning them the beating of their lives? What does it say about your supposed anti-smuggling war that tipping you off is no different from tipping smugglers off? Who are the Customs officers who snitched on their colleagues and on these men? Will you ever find the thugs who dehumanised and tortured their fellow humans in this manner or will they go scot-free? Good evening, CustomsNG. I’m writing to congratulate your hierarchy on securing their latest lucrative deal with smugglers in Owode, Ogun State. Loaded with rice, the vehicles in the appended video were released from Idiroko to Owode by Customs officers Ajao and Najeem Akorede. But they were blockaded last Wednesday at the Owode International Market by 13 Customs Hilux vans. After eight days, the 13 Hilux vans have finally left Owode but without a single bag of rice. Not one! Multiple sources have since told me the vehicles, estimated to be more than 1,500, are set to smuggle the 97,500 bags of rice (that’s over 4,875,000kg at 50 kg multiplied by the usual 65 bags per car) from Owode into Sango later tonight. They say the smugglers have this clearance because they have ‘settled’ Customs. And I have no reason to disbelieve them: I personally became aware of the apprehension of the vehicles on Friday, and I have since been patiently awaiting Customs and their PR blogs and newspapers to announce this largescale seizure of rice, to no avail. So congratulations once again to all Customs officers on those 13 Hilux vans, and bigger congratulations to the senior ones pulling the strings from the coziness of their offices!

In these videos, filmed on Saturday night, your men can be spotted at patrol stops and at checkpoints giving passes and granting thoroughfare to smugglers crossing into Lagos via Badagry. While many of the cars were evidently smuggling rice, chicken and turkey, the contents of some cars remained unknown, with no guarantees that they did not include illicit drugs and arms. Those who know that route will recognise Gbaji Bridge in one of the videos; nobody enters Badagry via Seme or Owode without using Gbaji. Your continued sabotage of the economy and our collective security is no longer hidden; one day, the people will rise!
