"If we took a moment to fully understand what President Trump is trying to accomplish, Canada might pursue a very different CUSMA strategy. We're not even trying. Tariffs may not have rebuilt America’s food-manufacturing sector yet, but they have forced manufacturers to adapt to higher input costs and become more productive. U.S. food manufacturing is now more productive than it was 18 months ago, while Canada is moving in the opposite direction—and that is not good for our food security."

"Canadian dairy farmers have had their cake and eaten it too. They receive compensation from Ottawa and benefit from significant market protection. Canada promised to allow more American dairy products into the country but failed to provide meaningful market access. It also promised to eliminate Class 7, only to replace it with a similar mechanism, while surplus milk continues to be dumped. The industry needs to cut the bullshit and be honest with Canadians."

"The entire controversy surrounding the Gordie Howe Bridge would likely never have happened had Canada maintained a strong relationship with the U.S. Prime Minister Carney made matters worse by misleading Canadians about the changes to the agreement. We should be thankful to Bloomberg, an American media outlet, for revealing that Carney had once again made concessions to the Americans."

I’m no fan of Secretary Howard Lutnik, not even remotely. That said, his assessment of the Canada–U.S. relationship is spot on. PM Carney’s current tone toward China is exceptionally risky.

"I’m astounded that Ottawa isn't pointing out that Canada has experienced much higher food inflation than the United States, even with a tariff-happy president in the White House. The explanation is simple: exporters to the U.S. are largely “eating” Trump’s tariffs. As a result, American consumers aren’t bearing as much of the cost as Canadians may assume. So the 50% tariffs taking effect August 19 on Canadian dairy products and liquor will therefore be absorbed largely by Canadian companies—not American consumers."

"Trump clearly forced Carney to concede on the Gordie Howe International Bridge, but the most important takeaway is that the bridge is finally opening on July 27. That's welcome news for North American agri-food trade: roughly 25% of all Canada–U.S. agri-food trade moves through the Detroit–Windsor corridor. Faster, more reliable border crossings should benefit producers, processors, retailers, and consumers on both sides of the border."
