Euro 96 started 30 years ago tomorrow. One of my favourite summers ever. The opening titles on the BBC and ITV always played a huge part in giving a tournament its own character and helping to create memories that last a lifetime. Here they are back-to-back, with the BBC first…

This Kenny Dalglish goal at Highbury in 1983 certainly is “magnificent”

World Cup 1990 was very special to me. I was almost 13. With it being held in Italy, the kick-off times were perfect for me in England. Every day, the school playground would be full of World Cup chat in between swapping stickers. Although the football might not have been the most entertaining, as a young England fan, it was the best summer ever. Take me back! Heroes for life were made that summer.

On 29/05/1999, a friendly was played in Dublin between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland to raise funds in the aftermath of the Omagh bombing. The game finished 1-0 to Northern Ireland, the winning goal coming from substitute Danny Griffin.

Surely the most famous free-kick of all time?! I remember being sat in my parents’ living room, enjoying Le Tournoi on 03/06/1997, when Brazil’s left-back, Roberto Carlos, took his time to carefully place the ball. It was a mile out. He can’t shoot from there! Can he? 😉 Nearly 30 years later, I still can’t quite believe what happened next.

On this day in 1986: No ticket for the Fa Cup final? No problem.

On 31/05/1997, England recorded a fairly routine 2–0 World Cup qualifying win in Poland, with goals from Shearer and Sheringham. The game is probably best remembered for something else, though: it was the first ever live football match shown on the new, “exciting” Channel 5. Jonathan Pearce was unleashed on a massively unprepared and unsuspecting world. At least he didn’t overdo it with his commentary anyway….

Where were you on 26/05/1999? If you’re a Manchester United fan, that day will be etched in your memory forever. Their first UEFA Champions League Final for 31 years appeared to be heading for heartbreak. Trailing 1-0 to German giants Bayern Munich going into injury time, it seemed that Alex Ferguson’s men had nothing left…. Clive Tyldesley, sounding magnificent on comms, takes the story up.

Because I wasn’t even nine, because we had won lots of meaningless friendlies in the twelve months leading up to the tournament and, most importantly, because I’m English, I was convinced Bobby Robson’s boys were going to bring the World Cup home. The 3rd of June 1986 was an ominous portent of things to come as Portugal beat England 1–0 in their opening game. Oh well, it’s only Morocco next…

A rain-soaked Hampden witnessed a fine Scotland performance as they beat England 1-0 to win the inaugural Rous Cup on 25/05/1985. In front of a fired-up Glasgow crowd, Scotland were sharper, more aggressive and fully deserved the victory. Richard Gough, heavily involved in the build-up, got his head to the cross to settle the contest.

It’s impossible to overstate my love for the FA Cup in this era — and this match. On 16/05/1987, I was nearly 10, a fan of neither club, but that day is etched in my memory. Iconic kits, brilliant players, and a ding-dong match, all played out in the Wembley sunshine on that unique-looking pitch. The FA Cup was so special.

Rangers’ hopes of a domestic treble were ended by Ivan Golac’s Dundee United at Hampden on 21/05/1994. Despite finishing mid-table in the league, United pulled off one of the great Scottish Cup final shocks. Craig Brewster — signed for just £250,000 as Duncan Ferguson’s replacement after his move to Rangers — pounced on a dreadful mix-up at the back to score the only goal of the game and seal a famous 1-0 win.

40 years ago today, my first ever World Cup began in Mexico. The holders, Italy, looked like getting their title defence off to a winning start, but a late Bulgarian equaliser foiled their plans. Aesthetically, it looks amazing and brings back so many fond memories of loved ones no longer with us, and of a truly wonderful childhood.

Just six months after taking over an Everton side rooted to the bottom of the Premiership, Joe Royle guided them to FA Cup glory. On 20/05/1995, his men defeated favourites Manchester United 1-0, ensuring Alex Ferguson would end the season empty-handed. Paul Rideout scored the winner, but Everton owed everything to the heroic defensive display of veterans Dave Watson and Neville Southall.
