On this day in 1986: No ticket for the Fa Cup final? No problem.

David Baddiel makes a joke about Colombia as a guest on BBC’s World Cup ‘94 coverage, which Bob Wilson seems keen to shut down. In light of what happened to Andres Escobar shortly afterwards, that exchange has aged rather awkwardly. It seems Bob was right to exercise some caution.

Opening day of the league season, 19th August 1989, and things are certainly looking up for Manchester United. Their “new owner”, Michael Knighton — a soccer enthusiast, no less — is doing keepy-uppies on the Old Trafford pitch. He promises to return the club to its rightful place, and his new side start the season in incredible fashion with an emphatic 4-1 win over champions Arsenal. What could possibly go wrong?

20/08/1988: Liverpool met Wimbledon at Wembley again, just three months after their shock FA Cup defeat. This time, it was the Charity Shield. The result was a little more in keeping with expectations: 2-1 to Kenny Dalglish’s men. But there are a few things from this that catch my eye. Peter Beardsley is pure class. His disallowed goal is beautiful. John Barnes and John Aldridge playing like this is nigh on unstoppable. And then there are the empty seats at Wembley… and a Rucanor advertising hoarding. Who remembers them??!!

Having started Euro 88 with a loss to Ireland in their opening match, England had no margin for error against the Dutch, who had also lost their opening game to the USSR. Ruud Gullit was the name on everyone’s lips and was widely tipped as the man to watch. However, on 15/06/1988, it was his AC Milan team-mate Marco van Basten who stole the headlines with a devastating hat-trick. His performance was immaculate. England were heading for an early exit, while the Dutch kept alive their dreams of European glory.

During Sky’s coverage of the 1999 Charity Shield (Arsenal 2–1 Man Utd) on August 1, Kirsty Gallacher and Paul Dempsey demonstrate Sky’s exciting new interactive features for the new season. A fascinating reminder of what “interactive TV” looked like at the turn of the millennium.

20/08/1983: The 1983 Charity Shield between Manchester United and Liverpool felt like a proper football match. There was a lovely touch before kick-off when recently retired Liverpool legend Bob Paisley was joined by United great Matt Busby for a lap of honour. The game itself was competitive, and Bryan Robson once again proved his worth by scoring both goals.

21/08/1993: Champions Manchester United faced Kevin Keegan’s exciting Newcastle United side, who had won plenty of plaudits in their first two games but had 0 points to show for it. On a sunny afternoon in Manchester, their time finally came and they earned their first point of the season. Cole scored his first-ever Premier League goal to make it 1-1, and little did we know at the time just how many he’d go on to score at Old Trafford. The home side had taken the lead through a brilliant Ryan Giggs free-kick. The plethora of dead-ball specialists at Manchester United in the 90s was quite something.

25 years ago today: the dawn of a new era. The Premiership was back, and ‘The Premiership’ was here. ITV had won the highlights rights, Des Lynam was presenting, and there was an early Saturday evening timeslot. Not to mention Andy Townsend in his Tactics Truck. Exciting times ahead.

An Old Trafford thriller on the opening weekend of the 2001/02 Premiership season. 19/08/2001 - 25 years ago!! 😮 Jean Tigana’s exciting, newly promoted Fulham were the visitors and took the game to Manchester United, nearly pulling off an unlikely result. Normal service was resumed, however, with new boy Ruud van Nistelrooy becoming an instant fan favourite. And Beckham’s free-kick and cross for the third too. 🔥
