On this day in 1993, separatist forces under Russia’s effective control took Sokhumi, capital of Abkhazia. A mass killing of civilians ensued also followed by expulsion of almost 300,000 people – majority of Abkhazia’s pre-war population in a wave of ethnic cleansing. Abkhazia is still occupied by the Russian Federation.

On this day in 2004, Aslan Abashidze, Russia-controlled dictator who ruled Georgia’s Adjara region with an iron fist and backing of the Russian military base there since 1991 fled to Moscow amid popular protests. With Abashidze’s fleeing, Georgia was able to restore its effective jurisdiction over the region.
