Yet another scene that would make #AI bros cry… This one was entirely hand drawn with key frames and main in-betweens done by me. It was my first episode as a director and I wanted to show what could be done with the show in terms of dynamic action. This episode paved the way for all of the #FairlyOddParents movies and established that we COULD, in fact, have big action sequences. It also established me as the “action guy for comedy shows.”

Obviously this guy is just grasping at straws in a feeble attempt to defend #AI (as if he cares about people), but it does remind me of something important… Me and every director I knew made every effort possible to get to know our outsourcing studio animators (they were people… humans… artists… not an algorithm). I would say stuff like, “This scene’s got a fire monster… I’ll bet you have someone there who loves drawing fire, right?” and I’d hear them laugh and say (through the translator) “We’ve got three… we’ll let them fight over it!” They weren’t faceless drones… they were part of the team to me. Moreover, I was taught that the best way to ensure that they weren’t overworked was by making sure that everything we ever sent was clear, detailed and easy to understand. There were lots of “They’ll fix it in Korea” directors. We referred to them as “hacks.” And we shunned them. Because we cared.

Just to give you some context… There was no single “thing” that inspired the “infinite hat gag” other than a love for random absurdity. For instance… I consider this the funniest thing of all time.

PLEASE HELP! COSTS YOU NOTHING! Seriously, guys… if just ONE QUARTER of you watched one of my 1 hr. Videos (or just had it playing on your phone while you do other things) I would be able to monetize my channel and pay my crews! Link in replies - reposts appreciated!

At Fountain's Pen Cartoons we aspire to break this cycle. We’re not just creating #IndieAnimation as a vanity project with one style (nothing at all wrong with that, btw)… Nor are we a costly tutorial course that puts you through outdated, rote exercises that teach technique without applicable experience… We’re a volunteer, multi-tier mentorship program that aspires to customize our members’ experience based on their personal goals. We also teach networking, pipeline management, time management, leadership, apprenticeship and self discipline. We learn by doing. Are we perfect? Absolutely not. But we’re doing something different - because you can’t evoke change by doing things the way that they’ve always been done. Oh - and we have fun! It’s our number one mandate. If you’re not learning AND actively enjoying the experience, you’re free to leave with absolutely no pressure, guilt or hard feelings. We don’t offer guarantees, but we offer one thing with clarity, honesty and sincerity: Hope.
