This is one of those things you have to see it to believe it🤯 On November 9, 1970, a 45-foot, roughly 8-ton sperm whale washed ashore near Florence on the Oregon coast. Three days later, the situation was getting worse. The carcass was decomposing, the smell was becoming unbearable, and curious people were coming down to the beach just to see it. At the time, Oregon’s beaches were under the responsibility of the Oregon State Highway Division, so somehow the job of getting rid of an 8-ton whale landed in the hands of highway officials. Assistant District Highway Engineer George Thornton was put in charge of figuring out what to do with something that was far too large to simply haul away. On November 12, reporters and spectators gathered on the beach to watch. KATU reporter Paul Linnman and cameraman Doug Brazil were there recording the whole thing. It did not go according to plan. More than 50 years later, the footage is still almost impossible to believe. What would you have done with an 8-ton whale you couldn’t move?

In May 2016, 15-year-old Karinya “Yaya” Chen was in hospice care in Austin, Texas after years of fighting cancer. She had tickets to see Florence The Machine, but by the night of the concert, she was simply too sick to go. So the people at Hospice Austin reached out to the band. And Florence Welch came to her. Florence and guitarist Rob Ackroyd walked into Karinya’s room and gave her the concert she couldn't make it to. They sang “Shake It Out” and “Dog Days Are Over,” with Karinya singing and harmonizing right alongside them. A few months later, Karinya lost her battle with cancer at just 15 years old. But for one afternoon, none of that seemed to matter. There was just a young girl, one of her favorite singers, a guitar, a room full of people who loved her... and music. Sometimes the smallest act of kindness can become one of the biggest moments of someone's life. This is what being human is supposed to look like.🙏

There’s something Hayden Panettiere once said about Remember the Titans that is especially difficult to hear today. Hayden was only 10 when she played Sheryl Yoast, the real-life daughter of coach Bill Yoast. In an Interview, while talking about the movie, Hayden mentioned that Sheryl had died very young. She was just 34. Hayden was 36. Two young women, connected by a role that introduced so many of us to Hayden more than 25 years ago. Sometimes there really isn’t anything more to say. Rest in peace, Hayden.

In 1964, Anthony Hopkins composed a beautiful waltz called And the Waltz Goes On. It was never performed, and over time the sheet music was forgotten. Nearly 50 years later, his wife found the music and sent it to conductor André Rieu, who arranged for it to be performed in Vienna in 2011. Imagine spending decades believing something you created would never be heard... then sitting in the audience as it comes to life for the very first time. Most people would be happy just surviving one skydive. He's spent decades mastering it. I understand why skydiving isn't for everyone... but it's hard not to respect this level of skill. In 1979, a man climbed into a rocket-powered Lincoln Continental and attempted to jump more than a mile across the St. Lawrence River. He had never driven the rocket car before. The stunt wasn't even his idea. Daredevil Ken Carter had spent years developing the car and preparing for the jump near Morrisburg, Ontario, even constructing a massive 1,400-foot ramp. But after years of delays and problems surrounding the project, stuntman Kenny Powers ultimately ended up behind the wheel. On October 5, Powers hit the ramp. The car was supposed to travel more than a mile. Instead, it flew roughly 500 feet before breaking apart and crashing into the river. Somehow, Powers survived, although he suffered multiple broken bones. I understand why people have always been fascinated by daredevils willing to push the limits, but there's something especially insane about getting into a rocket-powered car you'd never driven and pointing it at a 1,400-foot ramp. Michael Jackson made a 39-minute horror film with Stephen King in the 1990s, and somehow an entire generation barely remembers it existed. It was called Ghosts. What started as an idea years earlier eventually became one of the most ambitious projects Michael Jackson ever put on film. Stephen King helped develop the story, and Stan Winston, the legendary special-effects artist behind some of Hollywood's most famous movie creatures, directed it. Jackson didn't just play the mysterious Maestro. He transformed himself through extensive makeup and effects to play five different roles, including the grotesque Mayor who leads a group of townspeople to the Maestro's mansion demanding that he leave. “2 Bad,” “Ghosts” and “Is It Scary” become part of an enormous supernatural dance production filled with practical effects, makeup and choreography. At more than 38 minutes, Ghosts even held the record for the longest music video for years, and in 1997 it received a special screening at the Cannes Film Festival. Everybody remembers Thriller. But how many of you remember Michael Jackson's Ghosts? And how many are seeing this for the first time?

Can you guess who this young actor is? This early 1970s commercial was for Safeguard, the antibacterial deodorant soap Procter & Gamble introduced in 1963. Safeguard wasn't just being sold as another bar of soap. The advertising leaned heavily into protection against germs and odor, especially for active families, and commercials like this became part of how the brand built its identity. As for the young man in the commercial, he was still early in his career, taking commercial work and smaller acting roles. The role that would eventually make him a household name was still years away. No cheating and looking it up. Do you know who he is?

Tim Curry was one of those actors you never forgot once you saw him. For some of us, he will always be Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. For others, he was the absolutely terrifying Pennywise in IT, the unforgettable Wadsworth in Clue, or Darkness in Legend. And then there was that voice. The Wild Thornberrys. FernGully. Peter Pan & the Pirates. Video games, animation, stage productions and countless characters where you might not have even realized it was Tim Curry until you heard that unmistakable voice. His career stretched across more than five decades, from the stage to film, television and voice acting. He could be hilarious, sinister, completely ridiculous or genuinely terrifying, sometimes all in the same performance. After suffering a major stroke in 2012, Tim faced a very different life, but he never completely disappeared. He continued doing voice work and making appearances, and in 2025 he was there to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the movie that helped make him a legend, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Tim Curry passed away Tuesday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 80 years old. There are actors who play great characters. And then there are actors who create characters nobody else could have possibly played the same way. Tim Curry was one of those. Rest easy, Tim.🙏 What role will you always remember him for? #TimCurry

One of the most recognizable songs of the 1980s happened because Sylvester Stallone couldn’t get the song he originally wanted. While working on Rocky III in 1982, Stallone wanted to use Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust.” An early cut of the movie had even been edited to the song, but he couldn’t secure the rights. They sent the footage to Jim Peterik and Frankie Sullivan with Queen’s song still playing over it and asked them to come up with something for the film. Peterik and Sullivan watched how well the music lined up with the action, especially the punches, and started building their own song around that driving rhythm. That’s where the opening guitar riff to “Eye of the Tiger” began. The song spent six weeks at No. 1, won Survivor a Grammy and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song. Did you know Stallone originally wanted “Another One Bites the Dust” for Rocky III?
