When I talk about cycling in London, the biggest barrier people mention, by far, is safety. Esp with kids. Yet a bike is still the most efficient way to get from A-B. Evidence👇 Imagine how many more would cycle if safe, protected infra was the norm rather than the exception.🚲

Two wheels, briefly defeated by four parked ones. 🚴‍♂️🚗 Nothing says “protected cycle lane” quite like having to swerve because someone’s decided it’s a convenient parking spot. If we want kids (& everyone else) to cycle safely from A-B, the lane has to be clear; not optional.

Dear highway engineers Part-time cycle lanes just don't cut the mustard. Ppl need to get around at all hrs, not just from 7am-7pm! If we want cycling to be a real alternative, we need 24/7 lanes—separated by more than a splash of paint! 🎨 Yours truly Ppl who travel by 🚲

When you see it, you can’t unsee it. No bus lane. 4 lanes for cars, 2 for parking, 2 for driving. Cars parked in the cycle lane. And some still blame bikes. Congestion costs London £3.85bn a year, yet we still prioritise parking over moving people.

I’ve been cycling to work since ‘09. The no of cycle journeys in the London has grown dramatically since. 🚲 I think that’s hugely down to investment in safe infrastructure. If people feel protected, they’re far more likely to bike. Keep 👏building 👏 cycling 👏 lanes 👏

In the UK, ~81% of all vehicles on the road are private cars. If in London the majority of private car journeys switched to other modes, there’d be far more space for commercial vehicles & people who genuinely need to drive. ~76% of traffic evaporated. You’re welcome 😉

With over 65% of the car trips by residents in London being <5km, the bike is the obvious alternative. But, cycle lane blockages like ⬇️ don’t enable vulnerable cyclists feel safe travelling. 😤 Keeping our bike lanes free will really encourage more ppl to switch from 🚗to 🚲.

Cycling infrastructure should be consistent and safe. Part-time lanes create confusion and put cyclists and drivers at risk. Full-time, segregated lanes encourage more people to ride. For kids to cycle safely, they need routes free from cars and buses. 🙏

The only thing stopping our kids from safely biking from A-B is the roads, not their ability. Today’s Haringey Cycling ride proved that, with riders from age 3 to their 80s! If we want to reduce traffic, safe sts for cycling are the only way forward. Let’s give everyone freedom!

Another grocery run & as it’s Sunday the painted bike lanes are out of action ☹️. I believe if there was segregated cycling infra along busier roads (like the A10) more ppl would feel safe making shorter journeys by bike leading to fewer cars on the road & less traffic! 🚲💚🚲

Just cycled through the new De Beauvoir bike crossing today. Dare I say it, the old crossing felt slightly safer. The signage was unclear, and it seemed like cars have the right of way. Is that correct?

After a trip to Finsbury Park we rode home. To get home we hve to cross the A10. There’s a bike lane but it’s out of operating hrs so cars can park. Safety is a primary reason ppl are put off cycling. Routes like this need to be safe to encourage more switches from 🚗 to 🚲.

A great e.g. of “you get what you invite.” Invite cars, you get cars. The part-time cycle lane is full of parked cars, while private cars take up most of the space. Most households here don’t have a car, yet look at how much public space is given over to storing & moving them.
