Michael was an outstanding player, he understands the game and he has qualities as a coach, but managing Manchester United and delivering a Premier League title is a completely different level of pressure. “When you look at the managers who win leagues, they usually have a proven track record of competing at the very top, dealing with difficult moments and finding ways to get results when the pressure is at its highest. United are a club where expectations are always to win trophies, not just improve or compete. I think Carrick has a lot of potential, but I don’t believe he is ready yet to take a club like Manchester United and win the Premier League. It’s a huge job, and I think it’s too big of a gamble at this stage of his career.”

Give him time, let him develop, and people will stop talking about the transfer fee and start appreciating the player Chelsea saw all along."
