When people have issues with tone and structure in an Asian movie, I'm reminded of Wai Ka-fai breaking down how his approach to storytelling changed once he converted to Christianity and adopted a "Western" worldview.

Sammo Hung's Lifetime Achievement Award speech from the 16th Asian Film Awards last Sunday (same time as those other awards). He cries, Joyce Godenzi cries, we all cry. 'Old Man' is what Sammo calls Yuen Woo-Ping, by the way.

Another amazing Johnnie To interview dropped, this time from the BBC. Exceptionally frank and outspoken as usual, going into detail his own creative block, the state of the industry, and the political situation in Hong Kong. Thread of highlights (when I get to it) 🧵

Johnnie To making a wish at his 70th birthday party last night. From left to right I spy directors Jonathan Li, Soi Cheang, and Wai Ka-fai, Louis Koo, Milkyway Image CEO Elaine Chu, and Wong Bo-lin (Mrs. To). I think it's screenwriter Yau Nai-hoi hiding behind Koo.

The cast of Pedicab Driver wishes you a happy year of the snake, and by that I mean Lau Kar-leung beats up a couple of dudes with a giant brush before being subbed out by Sammo Hung to do some calligraphy while wearing matching hot pink Nike sweatshirts.
