JUST IN: Brian Armstrong challenges France central bank governor on Bitcoin at World Economic Forum in Davos 🔥 François Villeroy de Galhau says "I trust more independent central banks with a democratic mandate than private issuers of Bitcoin". Armstrong hits back: "Bitcoin is a decentralized protocol. There's actually no issuer of it. So in the sense that central banks have independence, Bitcoin is even more independent. There's no country or company or individual who controls it in the world."

How was Michael Saylor able to buy $2.5B of Bitcoin this week? Adam Back explains $STRC to The Block 👇 "It's a proposition bet. I need $ to buy BTC. Lend it to me at 10%. Then buy BTC b/c it's gone up 60% in 10 years. Even if it decays, it's a good arbitrage." Full 📺 in the 🧵

Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin says Len Sassaman & Hal Finney are probably Satoshi. As we ponder the quantum threat, Lubin says Bitcoin will have to migrate to quantum secure wallets. The big question - what do we do with Satoshi's Bitcoin? Lubin weighs in 👇 The Block

The World Economic Forum doesn't talk about Bitcoin - so I made sure that we did in 2025. I took the chance to ask if the US will adopt a Bitcoin strategic reserve during the 'Crypto at a Crossroads' session inside this year's WEF conference. Coinbase's Brian Armstrong remains confident we will see a Bitcoin reserve in America. Interestingly, South Africa's Reserve Bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago made it evident that many still don't understand the underlying value proposition of Bitcoin. Armstrong provided an important response: "Many things have been used as money over the years. I think it's clear at this point that, you know, Bitcoin is a better form of money than gold. It is provably scarce, just like gold, but it's more portable and divisible. So you can actually use it. It was the best performing asset of the last ten years. And so for a store of value, I think it's going to be important for governments to hold this over time. It may not it might start with being 1% of their reserves, but I think over time it'll come to be equal to or greater than gold reserves." Cointelegraph

Last year, jack launched #Bitchat, a bluetooth p2p encrypted messaging app. Now, it's leading a revolution in Uganda 🇺🇬 I doubt Dorsey would have thought Bitchat could help Ugandans contest the 38-year presidency (dictatorship) of Yoweri Museveni. Here's why <1M people are using Bitchat ahead of the 2026 Uganda elections 👇 Bitchat allows people to communicate without relying on internet or mobile connectivity. Why does that matter? Because the Ugandan government has previously cut off internet access during the past two elections, limiting the spread of accurate information and communication during voting. Robert Baggs and I had a fascinating conversation with Ugandan Bitcoin advocate Brindon⚡, who has personally used Bitchat in recent months. As Mwiine explains, Bitchat will allow Ugandan's to continue communicating during the 2026 elections, even if the current administration limits internet and mobile usage. This is the reason why peer-to-peer, freedom tech like Bitchat, Bitcoin, Nostr and Signal matter. When governments actively surveil and censor, we still have an opt-out. Share widely. Uganda is using p2p tech in a revolutionary way in real time. Cc calle Paolo Ardoino 🤖 Giacomo Loathsome Bitcoin Destroyer Zucco Joe Nakamoto ⚡️ BOBI WINE

So, what do hardcore Bitcoiners actually think about Zcash? 🤔 To quote Saifedean Ammous - "Zcash is a shitcoin." Honestly, I expected that answer. But what he said about privacy and money was even more interesting 👇 "This is the question. How much demand is there for money that does not get debased versus how much demand is there for money that allows you to maintain your privacy?" I think this provides a good avenue for Bitcoin supporters who are interested in Zcash to share their views and counterarguments to Saif's views. Would love to hear from zooko🛡🦓🦓🦓 ⓩ Eli Ben-Sasson | Starknet.io Josh Swihart 🛡 and others. You can find the full interview for Cointelegraph in the comments.

So, why did the Winklevoss twins launch cypherpunk - the first Zcash Treasury Company? Why are they bullish on Zcash 🛡️? Can Bitcoin and Zcash coexist? I caught up with Tyler Winklevoss and Cameron Winklevoss last week for Cointelegraph - here's everything they said about Zcash 👇 "We're huge fans of Bitcoin. We're hodlers, of course, and also huge fans of Zcash, which we view as encrypted Bitcoin." "Bitcoin is where you store your value and Zcash is where you transact or spend your value. And so we launched a DAT, a treasury company for Zcash, but it's really dedicated to privacy and self-sovereignty to help mainstream these ideas. The catalyst for Bitcoin was the financial crisis of 2008. And the catalyst for privacy is the dawn of the age of AI." You can find the full interview on Cointelegraph YT channel below 👇

Donald Trump was the first president to launch a memecoin and the US is on the verge of establishing a strategic Bitcoin reserve. I had to ask president Cyril Ramaphosa 🇿🇦 if he’ll launch a $RAMAPHOSA coin 🇿🇦😭 Jokes aside, I asked him whether the South African government is considering the merits of a Bitcoin strategic reserve. With the US on the cusp of establishing a BTC stockpile, countries like South Africa may well follow suit if such legislation is passed. Here’s what he had to say outside the World Economic Forum 👇

The TL;DR of the quantum threat to Bitcoin is cracking Satoshi's coins. Charles Hoskinson told Adam Back that a hard fork still looks like the only solution. Pierre Rochard recently told me Satoshi's coins should be fair game for quantum computers. Adam Back says there's a chance that Satoshi's are migrated - and privacy advancements could make that happen without anyone noticing 🤯 Our full interview for The Block is in the comments 👇

Did you know that Trezor invented seed phrases that over 300 million hardware wallets use today? "The seed phrase, the wallet backup, the way you write down those 12, 20, 24 words, was actually invented by Trezor, the original founders. That is BIP39." This was an absolute gem of an insight from Trezor CEO Matej Zak on our latest Chain Reaction show. Check out the full interview in the comments with myself and Robert Baggs for Cointelegraph 👇

9 months ago, Bybit suffered the largest-ever crypto heist, as hackers stole ~$1.5 billion in Ethereum (~401,000 ETH) during a routine ETH transfer. Since then, the team Safe.eth has completely overhauled its infrastructure and systems. Safe CEO spoke candidly about the incident and learnings on our latest Chain Reaction show for Cointelegraph. We now know that attackers (likely Lazarus Group) compromised a Safe{Wallet} developer machine, injecting malicious JavaScript into the UI, which tricked Bybit's multi-sig process into approving a malicious smart contract. The incident was a wake-up call for the entire cryptocurrency industry. This is a must-watch segment unpacking how Safe and wallet infrastructure providers are levelling-up to deal with the constantly evolving threats from hackers.

Andreas Antonopoulos is widely considered as one of the best-ever Bitcoin educators. This week, he announced he will stop making content due to ongoing health issues. But Andreas (aantonop Team) stopped being active on X a while back - Jameson Lopp explains why it's a huge loss to Bitcoin 👇 I've been seeing guys like VLAD HOSTS THE BEST PODCAST IN BITCOIN talk a lot about Bitcoin 'post maximalism' and it's a concept I agree with. It's not a crime to explore the world around Bitcoin. Bitcoin is cut from a different cloth, but it doesn't mean that there aren't meaningful, innovative protocols being built using the same technology. Antonopoulos stopped appearing at conferences and largely moved to Patreon to continue his education content. Bitcoin needs someone of his calibre once again.

"Why would I spend my Bitcoin? It's your one chance to save generational wealth." You'll often hear that from Bitcoiners in the Western world. But in 🇿🇦, we have a different relationship with money. "When you do start spending Bitcoin, you buy more Bitcoin so you can spend it as well, then you end up saving more as well. So you actually end up in a better position," says BTCarel 🟠⚡️🇿🇦 from Money⚡️Badger. It's even more powerful in Bitcoin circular economies, as Hermann Vivier from Bitcoin Ekasi explains. "What we're trying to do is to get Bitcoin to flow within the local community. It's not about how many merchants you onboard. It's about what happens to the sats that you spend," Vivier explains. "It's not about going out and onboarding shops. It's about onboarding one shop and then playing detective and finding out what they are doing with the sats that they are receiving." "You want to try and circulate the sats in the local community. You don't want those sats to leave the local community as far as possible. And with the effect being that when people are spending sats in our local circular economy, the value stays within the community." This was one of my favourite Bitcoin-focused #CHAINREACTION shows to date. Thanks again to vryfokkenou Stafford Masie Carel de Jager for joining Robert Baggs and I. Quick shoutout to Seeker | Solana Mobile. Received a Solana Seeker to review & so far, I’ve enjoyed the experience. Setting up the Seed Vault was easy. Sent some SOL to the new wallet and that took like 3 secs. I’m a long time android user - so it feels native. 👏

So, does it matter that Bitcoin seems to be moving away from its cypherpunk roots? Bitcoin ETFs and Bitcoin Treasuries have taken BTC mainstream. So I asked Saifedean Ammous this very question. His answer might surprise you... 👀👇 "If you have very strong feelings about how people should and shouldn't use Bitcoin, you're in for a rough time." "To be honest, a lot of people project too much onto Bitcoin. Ultimately, it's just a bunch of software and anybody can use it in any way they want. Initially, it's a small subset of people that use it and then they start projecting their values onto it. And then over time, they expect it to continue to abide by that," Ammous said. "If it's a successful technology, it's going to be used by everybody. It's going to be used by small businesses, large businesses, governments, individuals. It's money. Everybody uses money. There are 8.5 billion people on Earth, they all use money and they're all going to continue to use money. And Bitcoin is just the best money." Ultimately, the protocol itself is immune to the financial instruments that TradFi has concocted. If people want to lend against their BTC or create complex financial products, that does not actually impact the underlying network. "The way that the protocol works is that it's completely blind to what you're doing with your coins on the Bitcoin blockchain there is no paper Bitcoin there's no such thing as paper Bitcoin there's only 21 million Bitcoin and every node makes sure of that every 10 minutes and then if somebody who has some of these Bitcoin on their private key decides to sell obligations or financial liabilities referring to that Bitcoin under any condition, that's their choice. It's outside of Bitcoin and it's outside of the realm of other Bitcoin users being able to say this is right or wrong and this should happen or shouldn't happen. People are going to do whatever they want with the Bitcoin, including selling access to it or exposure to it in all kinds of different ways. And if you don't like it, you don't buy it, you can stack your own Bitcoin." You can find the full interview for Cointelegraph in the 🧵.
