At some point when reviewing plays, the league should consider adding a speed threshold for anything involving the element of time. When you slow plays down to 1/100th the speed, it distorts what actually happened and makes it look like, in this case, Cooks possessed the ball for seconds prior to losing it. The game is not played in slow motion or frame by frame. For a catch: A) Secure control of the ball ✅ B) Two feet down in bounds ✅ C) After (a) and (b) have been fulfilled, clearly performs any act common to the game (e.g., extend the ball forward, take an additional step, tuck the ball away and turn upfield, or avoid or ward off an opponent), or he maintains control of the ball long enough to do so. C is where there is a judgement needed since A and B are clearly met. Now consider this note to the rule: If a player, who satisfied (a) and (b), but has not satisfied (c), contacts the ground and loses control of the ball, it is an incomplete pass if the ball hits the ground before he regains control, or if he regains control out of bounds. Because Cooks did lose control of the ball when he contacted the ground and the ball never contacted the ground, it was ruled an interception by Denver.

$When officiating the line of scrimmage, general philosophy is not to be overly technical and split hairs over very minor infractions (such as a receiver's hand slightly breaking the LOS). However, when an infraction is so egregious and obvious, a flag has to be thrown. Kadarius Toney is blatantly lined up offside and in the neutral zone. You rarely see an offsides penalty on the offense, but that is not because this play in #BUFvsKC isn't a foul. It is because a receiver rarely lines up offsides.$

Initially, this looked like mutual hand fighting between CeeDee and the defender, but the arm lock at the end looked more like offensive pass interference than defensive pass interference to me. #DALvsBAL

For a player to be ruled down by contact, the defender’s contact does not have to be the reason the player goes to the ground. If contact occurs and the player subsequently goes down, the player is still ruled down by contact.

To have a completed pass, the receiver must: 1.) Secure control of the ball ✅ 2.) Have both feet or a body part (other than hands) in-bounds ✅ 3.) Perform a football move (take a third step, tuck the ball away, turn upfield, avoid/ward off an opponent) or to maintain control of the ball long enough to do so❌ In #PITvsBAL, the third element was not met. The ball came loose prior to the receiver completing the third element.

I am more surprised that the ruling on the field in #NOvsBAL was touchdown vs instant replay standing with the on-field ruling. After looking at all the angles in replay, I can't see the football cross the goal line. Plays at the goal line are incredibly hard to overturn because of the obstruction of bodies and the lack of a clear and obvious shot that shows the runner down with the ball visibly short. There is also a clear facemask on Shough, but that aspect of the play is not able to be changed via replay. Incredibly difficult and frustrating play to weigh in on from the booth. This ruling stands regardless of what the ruling on the field is IMO.

At the end of #PITvsDET, the ruling on the field was: A completed catch, a backwards lateral, and a touchdown by Detroit. There was a flag thrown for offensive pass interference. The clock was at 0:00 when the touchdown occurred and because the penalty was committed by the offense, the game is over and the touchdown does not count.

Teams often have just seconds to decide on a challenge. New England hurried to the line here, and Buffalo likely regrets not challenging. The ball appeared to come loose as Boutte’s right hand hit the ground.

Just an unbelievable, LeBron-esque chase down block by Samford’s AJ Staton-McCray. Did not like the foul call here, this appeared to be all ball. #NCAAMarchMadness

The ball contacting the ground does not unequivocally determine if a pass should be ruled complete or not. However, when loss of possession occurs as the ball contacts the ground, the ground is essentially aiding the receiver in the process of the catch. In #ALAvsUGA, I believe that the receiver did not maintain possession of the ball as it contacted the ground and would’ve liked to see this play reviewed.

Incredibly close play that was ruled in #LACvsKC. Ruled a completed pass on the field. The ball can touch the ground, as long as the receiver maintains possession. The clip at the beginning shows exactly what this looks like from the official’s on-field view. 👀

Officials on the field have to let these ones "play out". The whistle being blown prevented this from being a touchdown. #NEvsDEN

Just absolute madness. 💥 Also, some love for one of the GOATs, Ian Eagle, delivering an all-time call on this one. 🎙️

Hits on punters/kickers are incredibly difficult to officiate. They were my least favorite plays to rule on when I reffed. My thoughts on the Roughing the Punter call in #Browns vs #Steelers.
