The exercises demonstrate that the PLA can blockade Taiwan and nearby islands under de-facto US military control (remember, US green berets are based in Kinmen, and U.S. military is training forces in Taiwan with billions in US arms shipments). The exercises come in response to Lai Ching-te’s election speech where he made several veiled references to Taiwan independence, as well as Biden’s bipartisan delegation which attended Lai’s inauguration. Even the Financial Times has said Lai Ching-te has pushed China’a red line too far. The message is clear: play with fire on Taiwan, and separatists and their U.S. backers will get burned.
