The exercises come in response to Lai Ching-te’s election speech where he made several veiled references to Taiwan independence, as well as Biden’s bipartisan delegation which attended Lai’s inauguration. Even the Financial Times has said Lai Ching-te has pushed China’a red line too far. The message is clear: play with fire on Taiwan, and separatists and their U.S. backers will get burned.
