In July 2017 at Panama City Beach, Florida, a powerful rip current swept two young boys out to sea. Their mother, Roberta Ursrey, and other family members swam out to help, but all nine quickly became trapped in the current just yards from shore. Beachgoers spotted the desperate situation and sprang into action. What began as a few people linking arms grew rapidly into a human chain of 70 to 80 strangers. Some anchored the line in shallow water while others extended it farther out. Jessica Simmons grabbed a boogie board and swam to the exhausted family, helping keep them afloat until the chain reached them.
