Their mother, Roberta Ursrey, and other family members swam out to help, but all nine quickly became trapped in the current just yards from shore. Beachgoers spotted the desperate situation and sprang into action. What began as a few people linking arms grew rapidly into a human chain of 70 to 80 strangers. Some anchored the line in shallow water while others extended it farther out. Jessica Simmons grabbed a boogie board and swam to the exhausted family, helping keep them afloat until the chain reached them. Ursrey’s mother suffered a heart attack during the ordeal and a nephew broke his hand, but remarkably, all nine family members survived. It remains one of the most inspiring examples of strangers uniting to save lives.
