For a spinoff/prequel, Halo: Reach using MP armor for Campaign is such a cool feature. You create your own unique self-insert of Noble Six. The character isn't Bungie's, they're yours. It makes Halsey's eulogy hit harder, too. She addresses it not to "Noble Six", but to YOU. "It didn't take long for Reach to fall. Our enemy was ruthless, efficient... but they weren't nearly fast enough. For you had already passed the torch. And because of you, we found Halo, unlocked its secrets, shattered our enemy's resolve. Our victory – your victory – was so close... I wish you could have lived to see it. But you belong to Reach. Your body, your armor, all burned and turned to glass. Everything... except your courage. That, you gave to us. And with it, we can rebuild."

"Commander, you've been wondering what your Spartans died for? They died for 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴." I love this Halsey line. It heightens the mystery of just what could be important enough to justify the deaths of two Spartans, AND ties in the rest of the campaign up until this point. It has two meanings, too. In universe, the looming Forerunner structure and the data it contains (the "latchkey" discovery) are worth the sacrifice... but to the player, the one who carries the data is equally as important: Cortana.

I've always recommended people play Halo in release order, not chronological order. Both for the intentional narrative callbacks and the game design progression. For a narrative example: on the level The Pillar of Autumn in Halo: Reach, you get contacted by Captain Keyes, who specifically mentions himself and the Pillar of Autumn by name. If you've played release order, you'd (hopefully) recognize his name/voice and be like "CAPTAIN KEYES??". But if you play chronological MCC order, you wouldn't really know who he is or what the ship is at that point. Another example is Halo Wars 1; The intro cutscene of Arcadia calls out the Pillar of Autumn by name, but the more potent callback is with the Spartan reveal afterward. The music and the visual of a single Spartan, who is shortly joined by (for the first time release wise) multiple Spartans together, just has more gravitas if you'd just played CE/2/3 beforehand. Game design wise, Halo had a gradual evolution of mechanics from CE to Reach. CE introduces the golden triangle, H2 with boarding/dual wielding, H3 with equipment, Reach for armor abilites/sprint, etc. Playing Reach first then CE after means you have an immediate, harsh regression in overall game feel. Between a single game you lose 10 years of mechanic/sandbox progression.

I've seen people wonder how we do the Elite lipsync in B00mrang's Halo 3 machinima, CRASH. Its a process of splicing all the dialogue into separate files, importing those files into the engine, and playing the dialogue on the player (in real-time!) Some examples: For ease of filming, I've also created custom keybind combinations to play and scroll through dialogue on the fly during gameplay. Of course, it would be nothing without the fantastic voice acting by Henry Schultz as Motan and Lucas MartinezVA☕️ as Otto!

The music from Halo 3's warthog run continues playing into the cutscene after. However, it may not always line up with the cinematic, ending earlier than intended. To fix this, a separate piece of music not on the soundtrack plays towards the end. Here is that music isolated: I absolutely love this music piece. It makes it seem as though the Halo ring sends out a string crescendo as it tears itself apart. As a side note: that shot of Cortana standing in front of Chief with Halo detonating in the background is the best cinematic shot in the franchise, bar none.

Halo Wars 1 Spartans are easily my favorite depiction of Spartans in the franchise. Mark IV is the best armor of course, but their proportions really make them seem like gargantuan larger-than-life supersoldiers. They perform feats which are clearly above those of normal humans, but nothing so insane as to feel over the top like Halo 5's intro cinematic. They don't talk often, but when they do it's brief and important. They look nearly identical to each other except for some minor unique flairs. THEY JUST HAVE SO MUCH AURA

Some more work I'm doing for Ruby of Blue's Halo 2: REBALANCE, polishing up 343 Guilty Spark's model! You might notice that the inverse flashing bug Joseph Staten mentioned in the Halo 2 Director's Cut Commentary is now fixed. (Note that this is a work in progress, and not final)

I've recreated the original Halo 2 credits in-engine for Halo 2: REBALANCE!! MCC Halo 2 doesn't show the original credits by default, instead just skipping to the post-credits scene. So I took it upon myself to give everyone who contributed the recognition they deserve! Not pre-rendered, fully recreated by hand from scratch based off eyesight alone. Yes, it was exactly as tedious as it sounds. I originally planned to just import the original video, but it turns out the Bink (pre-rendered video) player for MCC Halo 2 is broken, so I had to manually set up dozens of slides and effects as textures/models in-game. At 4K resolution too, so even higher quality than the original! Slide transitions and effects are all handled via game script and like a million different object function variables. I'd then time each slide/transition so that it all matches the original video. It fits right in exactly where it should, between "Finishing this fight" and the Cortana/Gravemind scene. It's a massive shame that the original credits for not just Halo 2, but ALL the games in MCC are missing. People spent years of their lives working on these games and are probably proud of their work, only to have the modern versions of them move their credits to a website that 99% of players won't see (and won't even work offline!). I couldn't imagine how frustrating it must be to have worked on these games and not get any recognition. So, at least for Halo 2: REBALANCE, the original developers, voice actors, and everyone else involved can get their due credit.

In Halo 2, you don't actually "destroy" the Scarab. You kill the pilots and it explodes in a cutscene. For Ruby of Blue's Halo 2: REBALANCE, I created a new power core for the player to destroy! Note that this is a work in progress, and not final. Concept art from early 2023.
