Metro Boomin says that sampling has gotten lazier in today’s day and age: “I don’t think they’re doing it right…The core of hip hop music has always been sample-based… [Today], it just be lazy...Now, something come on and you be like, ‘oh yeah, that’s In Da Club.’ You just know off top. It’s not no ‘oh, I took this and flipped it, reversed it, chopped it’…There’s not that much creativity in it.” Via Chelsea Cotton & ECB Studio

BNYX talks about Drake putting him on to Dipset: “First time I heard Dipset, I was on an airplane with Drake…It was some of the craziest music that I’ve ever heard.” Say what you want about Drake, but he is a hip hop nerd through and through 🤷🏼♂️ Via Elsie not Elise 💿

Today I learned that the reason J. Cole got emotional the other night performing ‘Love Yourz’ in the now viral clip was because of a kid named Collin Griffin, who he met in 2017 when Collin was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. Collin’s Make-A-Wish was to meet Cole, and when he passed away the next year, Cole was even mentioned in his obituary. Collin met Cole backstage at a show in DC, and Dreamville took care of him with merch and the like. Cole even took the shoes off his feet and signed them for Collin, asking him to work hard to beat cancer. Collin told Cole that his music has been inspirational for him and helped him get through this difficult time, to which Cole responded "No, you inspire me." Collin broke down in tears. Fast forward to Cole’s Cleveland show over the weekend, Collin’s family attended and held up pictures of him, which Cole called out right before performing ‘Love Yourz.’ Collin loved to draw, had a great passion for music, and he lived each day to the fullest. RIP 💙🕊️ “We love Collin, man” -Cole

Chance the Rapper shares advice that Dave Chappelle gave to help him move past the criticism of ‘The Big Day’: “He said, ‘Albums are just yearbook photos…They’re not everything that you’ve been through [in your entire life], it’s just who you are in that moment, who you showed up as that day in 7th grade, and we got a snapshot of it. The beauty in it is that it’s true, and no matter what, you can look at it like, that’s who I was in 7th grade.’ Once I started to create ‘Star Line’ under the understanding that this is who I am right now…It became so much easier.” Via The Vic Mensa Show

Because without the listener, I’d have no voice… Cole got a great song about that on his last album…‘Quik Stop’…That was so profound to me.” Via the Lemme Ask You This Podcast

Rapsody speaks on hip hop culture being given away to those that don’t care about it, especially within hip hop media like DJ Vlad and No Jumper: “It’s a beautiful art form, and we haven’t projected it enough in that way…We’ve given it to the wrong people…I just love this culture too much, and there are people that really love it and care about it… We’ll talk about things that we don’t like vs. the people that we do like. How are we being intentional with our art form and our story and our truth and who we give it to.” Effective Immediately ❗️

Ebro says that a popular female rapper expressed a similar sentiment to him about women rapper fanbases: “She said, the problem that a lot of women who rap have, is that most of the fans who like women rappers, they’re not hip hop fans. They’re fans of that woman, her aesthetic, where she’s from, whatever…She was like, ‘I grew up a hip hop fan. I want all of it: the ratchet stuff, the smart stuff, the street stuff, the pop stuff…” EbroLauraRosenberg

The Ebro Laura Rosenberg Show discusses how different fandoms have been moving after the 2024 battle: Ebro: “Cole fans are the nicest people ever, they mind their own business. They’re out there enjoying their guy, loving the shows, loving the album…Cole fans are hip hop fans.” Rosenberg: “There are a lot of hip hop fans that are Drake fans and Kendrick fans. But there’s also a sect of Drake and Kendrick fans that are not hip hop fans, they were just rooting for them in a battle. They’re like team supporters.” Pusha T on ‘Call My Bluff’: “Sometimes I wish my fanbase was more like J. Cole’s” EbroLauraRosenberg
