Happy 103rd Birthday to Grand Canyon Railway Steam Locomotive 4960! Video shows locomotive 4960 leaving the Grand Canyon Village Depot, with several people waving as it passes by. 4960’s 103rd birthday celebration takes place this Saturday, August 15. Learn more: For railroad enthusiasts, here is a brief history of 4960, as shared by Grand Canyon Railway & Hotel: "Built in 1923 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Steam Locomotive No. 4960 was initially put into service by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad, transporting iron ore and various freight across the American Midwest. After its retirement from the CB&Q RR in 1960, it operated excursion trains, museum trains, and circus trains across Wisconsin and other Midwestern states until the early 1970s, when it was placed on static display. The Grand Canyon Railway acquired it in 1989. In 1996, No. 4960 was extensively rebuilt and restored, transitioning from coal to diesel fuel. In 2009, it underwent further modifications to run on recycled Waste Vegetable Oil. Since then, No. 4960 has been the mainstay of our steam fleet, powering all of the GC Railway's steam-powered excursions and round trips to the Grand Canyon. - which usually talk place on the first Saturday of the month, from March through October. Its widespread appeal has made No. 4960 an icon among active steam locomotives in the United States." 📷 As an alternative to driving, take the train. Depart from Williams, Arizona, in the morning and ride Grand Canyon Railway to the South Rim Village. (Distance 59.7 miles/96 km)
