Dusty May said it best: “A lot of failure comes with simply being afraid of the results. We were never afraid of the results.” Most teams don’t lose for lack of talent. They lose playing not to lose. And the second you play not to lose, you already have. Being fearless is not a personality trait. It is built. Here are 3 ways to do it: 1: Coach the process, not the scoreboard. Reward the hard cut, the box out, the right read. Make the standard the thing they chase. When the work becomes the win, the scoreboard stops being scary. Remember: You are what you emphasize. 2: Rep failure until it loses its power. Fear of losing comes from never practicing it. Keep score in practice. Down 6, two minutes left. Let them fail on Tuesday so Friday isn’t a cliff. Built, not talked about. 3: Make the standard so clear they stop guessing. Fear lives in uncertainty. Compete hard. Next play. Trust your read. Say it every day until they finish your sentence. Clarity kills hesitation. Teach them to compete and let the scoreboard take care of itself. How do you build fearless competitors?
