At approximately midday today, a group of Israelis led by a Member of Knesset and accompanied by Israeli media entered without authorisation into UNRWA’s compound in Sheikh Jarrah, #EastJerusalem. The group asserted they were “liberating” the “former UNRWA headquarters” on the occasion of Jerusalem Day, which for Israelis marks the reunification of the city. However, under international law, East Jerusalem is occupied territory and its annexation by the State of Israel is not recognised. The group brought flags and erected banners, seeking to claim the compound for the establishment of a new Israeli neighbourhood. This morning, heavily armed Israeli Security Forces entered the UNRWA schools in Shu’fat Camp in #EastJerusalem, with the intent to enforce the illegal closure orders issued on 8 April 2025. The Israeli Security Forces harassed UNRWA teachers and detained one UNRWA staff member, ordering them to dismiss the students. As a precautionary measure, UNRWA evacuated its three other schools in East Jerusalem. Security forces were also seen at these schools. Children left in tears. Palestine Refugee children are at immediate risk of losing their #AccessToEducation. UNRWA's schools are, and will remain, United Nations schools. These schools have continued to operate based on the principled approach that the anti-UNRWA Knesset bills banning UNRWA activity in #EastJerusalem are inherently illegal. UNRWA’s mandate, granted by the United Nations General Assembly, includes East Jerusalem. Israel's actions today are a grave violation of its obligations as a UN member state under international law.
