Last Sunday (30 August), discovered dear 🇮🇳scholar | cultural revivalist friend Mahmood Farooqui (Mahmood Farooqui) in striking shade as he launched THE TIHAR PLAYERS - A PRISON MEMOIR, at India International Centre(Official Account). I knew him as a champion of Dastangoi (an oral story-telling art form performed in #Urdu). Yet, employing his signature wit and deep sensibility, through the voices of some of his Tihar inmates, he brought to life a riveting account of the most disturbing part of his life i.e. a year in prison. The audience witnessed how Mahmood subtly pointed to the taboos, (mis)perceptions or ‘given’ across societies, beyond crimes and criminals. #NorthEastIndia is known to #people for several things, including for ethereal beauty of its pristine #Nature, as it is. As I was to travel from Gauhati to Agartala, decided to opt for 15/16 hrs train instead of 50-minute Gauhati- Agartala flight. The highly scenic route traversed challenging mountainous terrain | bridges across Brahmaputra Valley - Jatinga Valley - Barak Valley, cutting thru North Cachar Hills (between #Assam and #Tripura). Entire Guwahati - Agartala #railway route spans about 561/571 km, featuring 21 tunnels in the Barail Hill Range section. The long journey was like a time travel. I kept glued to window - seeing streams | rivers -tea gardens - foliage changing shades. There were stretches miles after miles with little human footprint. Uniquely unspoiled bio-diversity. Listening to the voices in train compartment and seeing their faces | expressions, realised how this 🚂 route forms a critical economic lifeline for 🇮🇳 Northeastern States. ![Last week (26 March), at 56th 🇧🇩National | Independence Day celebration in Delhi, a milestone was etched quietly. A key part of the ceremony was to play 🇧🇩🇮🇳 National Anthems. Standard protocol has been to play the instrumental versions, of both Anthems. Yet, in an effort to touch #people, Bangladeshi #music ensemble (who travelled from Dhaka for the august occasion), proposed to render both Anthems, live! [Ayesha doesn't spk a bit of #Hindi!]. They neatly made it. Flawless. Much to the surprise of hundreds of guests at our garden, as Ayesha Maushumi & Jahib Nirob sang and Jalal-Pavel-Mithun chipped in with their musical 🎵instruments, those three-minute profoundly underlined a fitting tribute to 🇧🇩🇮🇳 ties that Nobel Laureate #RabindranathTagore envisioned over a century back. Finally, #rain god blessed Delhi: #Monsoon rains soaked the soil. Good or bad, humidity has replaced heat. Friends often complain, "Oh, rain slows the traffic". I answer plainly, "When it rains, we cry. When it doesn't, then also we cry". Deep down, Monsoon rains defines much in #Bangladesh & #India => #people #culture #nature. Gush of rains just don't spark poems or songs. Our aquifers get re-charged, esp, to feed farms when significant part of S. Asian #delta still remains rain-fed. Eventually, politics gets impacted as well. Else, our Met Offices could have cared less about below/above-normal Monsoon projection. Let's celebrate each Monsoon and value #water.

🇧🇩Chief Adviser HE Prof Muhammad Yunus shares #Bangladesh's concerns, complex ground realities of #Rohingya crisis. In view of the deteriorating human security, Prof. Yunus proposed: "A. #UN Secretary General António Guterres may convene an all stakeholders’ Conference on Rohingya crisis soonest possible which should review overall situation of the crisis and suggest innovative and forward looking way outs; B. Joint Response Plan, managed jointly by UN System and Bangladesh, needs to be energised. Resource raising mechanism needs further political push in view of sliding funding situation; C. Int'l community should seriously support #justice and accountability mechanism to address #CrimesAgainstHumanity committed against Rohingya people. Progress on the Case in #ICC is important. Eventually, redressing injustice that had been perpetrated by military junta in Myanmar is the key to long term peace and security."
