A woman employed at a private company in Punjab's Mohali was allegedly stabbed to death by her former boyfriend and colleague, who later attempted to take his own life, police said. The incident took place at the company's office on Thursday evening and has prompted a police investigation into the circumstances leading up to the attack. The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Dimple, a resident of Patiala. The accused, Harjinder Singh Mann (39), also known as Harry, was reportedly in a relationship with her for more than three years. The stabbing incident has been caught on CCTV cameras installed at the office. According to preliminary findings, the two worked together at a private courier company, where their professional association eventually developed into a romantic relationship. However, the couple had ended their relationship some time ago. Police sources indicated that Harjinder was struggling to come to terms with the breakup and had made repeated attempts to reconcile with Dimple. Investigators believe his efforts were unsuccessful, leaving him emotionally distressed in the weeks leading up to the incident. The attack reportedly unfolded late Thursday evening at the company office premises in Mohali. Authorities said an argument broke out between the two colleagues, following which Harjinder allegedly attacked Dimple with a knife, stabbing hime multiple times as some colleagues tried to intervene and stop the attack but to no avail. Following the attack on Dimple, Harjinder also stabbed himself and tried to end his life. However, he survived. Employees present at the office were left shocked by the sudden violence and immediately alerted the police. Upon receiving information about the incident around 7:40 pm, a police team rushed to the scene and found both individuals critically injured. Dimple and Harjinder were taken to Fortis Hospital for treatment. Doctors later declared Dimple dead, while Harjinder remains hospitalised in critical condition. Police have registered a murder case and launched a detailed investigation. Aman Baidwan, Station House Officer of Phase-11 police station, confirmed the woman's death and said her family had been informed. Further legal proceedings will continue after the arrival of her parents and the recording of their statements, they said. Investigators have sealed the crime scene and collected forensic evidence. CCTV footage from the office premises has also been seized and is being examined to reconstruct the sequence of events. Police officials said they are verifying all aspects of the case, including the nature of the relationship between the accused and the victim and the events that immediately preceded the stabbing. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities expected to rely on forensic findings, witness statements and surveillance footage to establish the motive and determine the full circumstances surrounding the fatal attack.

Two weeks ago, a short video featuring one-and-a-half-year-old Arshid and his mother, Akhila, drew widespread attention on social media. Filmed by a YouTuber in mid-May, the video showed the little boy with both hands in plaster casts. When asked what had happened, Akhila replied that he had fallen from a bicycle. As the clip spread online, many viewers responded with light-hearted comments, describing the child as mischievous or “naughty”. Few could have imagined that behind the brief interaction lay a story of prolonged suffering. On May 29, Arshid died. Investigators now say the injuries visible in that viral video were not the result of childhood mischief but part of a pattern of severe and repeated physical abuse allegedly inflicted by his stepfather, Ashkar, 31. The Nedumangad police arrested Ashkar after a post-mortem examination revealed extensive internal injuries, including bleeding in the head and other parts of the body. The findings pointed to sustained violence rather than an accident. According to investigators, the one-and-a-half-year-old bore nearly 50 injury marks of varying ages and severity across his body. Some injuries were fresh, while others appeared older. Police said burn marks, suspected to have been caused by cigarette stubs, were also found. The case came to light on Friday when Ashkar took the child to a private hospital in Panavoor, claiming that he had choked while eating lunch. Arshid was later shifted to SAT Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. At the time, Akhila, 24, was reportedly in Tamil Nadu for a dance programme. Although relatives initially expressed concerns about the circumstances surrounding the child’s death, police launched a deeper investigation only after medical findings suggested foul play. Reports suggest that the child’s grandparents had earlier alerted the police about suspected repeated assaults on the boy, but no action was taken at the time. The probe, led by the Nedumangad DySP, uncovered evidence that Arshid had allegedly been subjected to repeated assaults over an extended period. Police said Akhila was aware that Ashkar regularly beat her son but neither intervened nor informed the authorities. She is likely to be included in the chargesheet as the investigation progresses. Police officials described the case as one involving not only violence but also prolonged neglect. Investigators traced the family’s circumstances in the years leading up to the child’s death. After the death of her husband, Akhila had reportedly informed authorities that she was unable to care for her son. The boy was subsequently looked after by her mother, while Akhila lived with Ashkar without being legally married to him.

A forensic team collected evidence from the office, and CCTV recordings have been seized for examination. Officials remained at the scene for several hours as part of the investigation. The families of both the victim and the accused, who are from Patiala, have been informed. Police said statements of family members will be recorded as part of the probe. A 22-year-old woman, an IIT graduate and the daughter of a senior bureaucrat, was found dead at her home in southeast Delhi's East of Kailash area. Police said she was raped before being strangled to death with a phone charger. She was alone at home at the time of the incident. There were no signs of forced entry. Police have arrested a 19-year-old domestic help, Rahul, who had worked at the house and was dismissed over a month ago. "Investigations revealed that he used to play online games and would borrow money from other servants in the vicinity, or from domestic staff working in nearby households, without ever repaying them. This is why he was fired," Joint Commissioner of Police Vijay Kumar said. He was arrested from a hotel in the Dwarka area, where he had been hiding. He is being charged with rape, murder and robbery, police said. Rahul was seen in CCTV footage leaving the victim's residence at 6:28 am, police said. According to police, the woman was found by her family members inside the house under suspicious circumstances, after which the authorities were alerted. Public outrage over the murder of a toddler spilled on to the streets on Sunday when local residents attacked the prime accused, Ashkar, during evidence collection at the crime scene. Police brought Ashkar to the house in Panavoor, where the child was allegedly subjected to prolonged abuse and torture. As news of his arrival spread, scores of angry residents who were gathered at the location, attacked him. Police personnel struggled to control the crowd and complete the evidence collection process before escorting him away from the area. Ashkar was seen explaining the incident to police without any visible signs of remorse. Deputy Superintendent of Police K Baijukumar said police recovered crucial evidence from the house, including objects allegedly used in the assault. Police are also investigating whether anyone else had a role in the abuse and whether the crime involved active participation or deliberate concealment by others. A major focus of the probe is the role of the child’s mother, Akhila. According to police, she has stated that she witnessed Ashkar physically assaulting the child on previous occasions. Police are now examining how much she knew about the abuse and whether she failed to intervene despite being aware of it. She is expected to be taken into custody for detailed questioning and evidence collection. The probe team refrained from taking Akhila for evidence gathering, given the public outrage. Both Akhila’s mother, Reena, and ex-husband Akhil’s family had sought the custody of the child. Even after Reena complained of suspected assault of the child to the police, Akhila’s statement was accepted on trust and the child’s custody entrusted to her. Akhil’s family also noted that Akhila maintained no contact with them after Akhil’s death and did not give them the child even after informing of their willingness. Allegations have emerged against Akhila from her own family. Her mother told reporters that Ashkar had previously made disturbing remarks about the child. Expressing disbelief over the boy’s death, she said the child had been safe while living with her family. “He once said the child would be treated like an infested dog. I strongly suspect Ashkar is behind this. The child had no issues when he was staying with me. After he was taken away, we were never allowed to meet him. If Akhila had seen him being abused even once, why didn’t she bring him back to me? He was such a sweet and obedient child,” Reena said. Meanwhile, serious allegations from Ashkar’s previous marriage have added another dimension to the investigation. Family members of his former wife alleged a long history of violent domestic abuse.

A Navi Mumbai based journalist Sandhya Jain (56), who writes on women's rights and safety, was badly injured in a hit-and-run accident recently on the Palm Beach Road, as a speeding motorcyclist jumped a red signal to crash straight into her scooty. Shockingly, the culprit biker has not been caught due to "poor CCTV camera quality" as the registered number plate of the motorcycle could not be captured on camera on the city's landmark road stretch. For the past nine days, Jain has been lying at Apollo Hospital at Seawoods with multiple fractures in both her hands, a nose fracture, facial trauma and various other smaller injuries. Talking to media from her hospital bed, Jain said, "On May 18, I was driving my scooty in order to go to NMMC head-office at Belapur to meet a civic official for some work. As per the CCTV recordings of two cameras at the NRI Junction of Palm Beach Road, at exactly 4.39 pm, this biker wearing a maroon shirt jumped the red signal and speeded ahead to dash into my scooty, while I was moving forward as my traffic light was green at that moment." Jain, who edits two magazines 'Women Zone' and 'Kanchan Kanika', added that as she fell down unconscious on the busy road, the biker simply lifted his motorcycle and slyly pushed it away from the accident scene in order to escape. Her husband, Sandeep Kumar Jain, who resides at NRI Complex, said, "It is surprising that while an FIR has been registered at NRI police station against the unknown biker for reckless driving, he has not been arrested as we do not have his vehicle number. The accident happened in broad daylight on the supposedly best road of Navi Mumbai, where several surveillance cameras are installed." The investigating officer (IO), Kiran Swar, of NRI police said: "We have checked some of the CCTV recordings at the time of accident in order to identify the culprit. However, the bike number plate is not properly seen in the video recordings. We are further inquiring into this matter." Commissioner of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), Kailas Shinde, told to media: "While NMMC does have a CCTV monitoring room at our Belapur head-office, the police also have a similar CCTV control room with them. They are the primary users of CCTV in order to check various traffic violations etc. Hence, the police should have reported earlier if there is any issue with the camera quality." Shinde added that at present, a private agency is in charge for the maintenance of the CCTV cameras. Social activist Madhu Shankar commented: "What is the use of such an extensive CCTV network in our city if the cameras cannot even capture the vehicle registration number. While Jain's hit-and-run accident took place in daytime, I wonder how vehicles will be identified at night if they are involved in any mishap. Both the NMMC and the police have to sort out this critical issue." City based social worker, Rajesh Singh, of Ganga Sagar Foundation, commented: "I regularly use the Palm Beach Road while driving, and have noticed CCTV camera installations at various traffic signals and junctions. In case the cameras fail to capture the number plates, then they should be replaced with better high definition cams, which also have Al tools to do face recognition."
