A 45-year-old woman was killed after a heavy iron section of a stage structure collapsed on her head during a Dahi Handi celebration in Old Sangvi on Friday night. The incident took place in Galli No. 2, where the Vighnaharta Dahi Handi Mitra Mandal had organised the event. The deceased, identified as Salma Salauddin Pathan, had attended the celebration with her husband, Salauddin, to watch their son, an active Govinda with the mandal, participate in the human pyramid and break the handi. The Dahi Handi was broken around 10.05 pm. Relatives said Salma appeared happy after watching her son’s performance. After the programme ended, her husband called her to leave for home. As the couple began walking away between around 10.30 pm and 10.45 pm, organisers reportedly began dismantling the large stage arch and lighting structure. During the dismantling, a heavy iron angle from the structure suddenly fell and struck Salma on the head. She sustained fatal injuries in the incident. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collapse and whether adequate safety measures were followed during the dismantling of the structure.

Shocking CCTV footage has captured the moment a car allegedly ploughed into a motorcycle and three autorickshaws waiting at a traffic signal in Mumbai's Malad West, killing a 34-year-old woman and injuring six others. The accident took place at around 8pm on Sunday at the Mamlatdarwadi-SV Road junction. The footage purportedly shows the car crashing into vehicles waiting at the signal, triggering chaos at the busy intersection. Priyanka Satra, a law graduate and mother of two, was seated on the pillion of a motorcycle being ridden by her husband, Mayank, when the car allegedly rammed into them. The impact threw the couple off the bike. Priyanka was rushed to hospital, where she was declared dead. Her husband suffered fractures and back injuries and was hospitalised. The car also hit three autorickshaws, injuring their drivers and passengers, police said. The 70-year-old driver, Krishna Chamankar, was arrested after the accident. Police said he claimed that he accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake while driving from the Malad subway towards SV Road. A medical examination reportedly found no alcohol in his blood. He was initially produced before a magistrate and later released on bail on a cash bond of Rs 15,000. The accident has sparked outrage, with the victim's family demanding stricter action against the driver. Relatives have also alleged that Chamankar received preferential treatment while in police custody, an allegation that police officials said was being examined, including through CCTV footage from the police station.

A school teacher allegedly hacked to death his wife and two children with a machete in Assam’s Dhemaji district on Wednesday morning, police said. The man’s eldest daughter, 13, was critically injured in the attack inside their house at Telam Bazar in Jonai town, they said. A police officer said the motive behind the attack is yet to be ascertained, but economic hardship is suspected. The deceased have been identified as Chinuara Begum (33), Shakil Ali (8) and five-year-old Rijika Begum. The injured daughter is undergoing treatment at a local hospital and her condition is stated to be critical, the officer said. The accused, an assistant teacher at Gamchuk Primary School, has been arrested and the machete seized from his residence, police said. He told reporters that he had carried out the act due to financial constraints. The school teacher claimed that he receives a salary of Rs 10,000 per month. A forensic team collected evidence from the residence and interrogation of the accused is underway, the officer said, adding, the bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination.

A 20-year-old man was killed by his two brothers-in-law at a bus stand in Punjab's Tarn Taran district on Sunday, around a month after he married their sister in a love marriage. The victim, identified as Jagjit Singh, was reportedly called to the Tarn Taran bus stand by his mother-in-law, who told him she wanted to visit his home. Unaware of what awaited him, Jagjit reached the spot carrying a cold drink and snacks he had bought from the market. According to the family and eyewitnesses, Jagjit's two brothers-in-law, identified as Jaspreet Singh and Harpreet Singh, were already waiting at the bus stand. They surrounded him and attacked him with knives. Eyewitnesses said the attackers continued stabbing Jagjit on his head and neck even after he collapsed and died. More than 60 wounds were reportedly inflicted during the attack. While several people at the spot remained spectators, a passer-by, Gurinder Singh, intervened and managed to overpower one of the accused, Jaspreet Singh. Gurinder himself sustained injuries while trying to restrain him. Jagjit's father, Tarsem Singh, a resident of Kadgil, said his son and Jashan Kaur had been in a relationship before their marriage. He said his family had approached Jashan's relatives to discuss the marriage, but they had refused to agree. The couple subsequently left home and got married around a month ago. Jagjit's family has cited the marriage as the reason behind the attack. According to Tarsem Singh, Jagjit's mother-in-law, Kinder Kaur, called him on Sunday afternoon and asked him to come to the Tarn Taran bus stand, saying she wanted to go to his house. Jagjit then reached the location, where the attack took place. Police reached the spot after receiving information about the killing. DSP Jaspal Singh said a forensic team was called to the scene and collected evidence as part of the investigation. Police have arrested Jaspreet Singh, while efforts are underway to trace Harpreet Singh. Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the attack and questioning those connected with the case. The investigation is ongoing, with police also looking into the sequence of events leading up to Jagjit's killing and the role of others who may have been involved.

An argument over money for an iPhone instalment ended in tragedy in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, where an 18-year-old boy and his parents died after going to a hill in the Tisgaon area, police said. The teenager, identified as Kunal, had reportedly purchased an iPhone but was unable to manage the instalment payments. According to investigators, a dispute over the latest EMI payment led to an argument with his father, Murlidhar Chandgude. After the argument, Kunal left home and went to a hill in Tisgaon, which falls under the Waluj MIDC police station limits. His parents followed him, while several local residents also joined efforts to persuade him to return. The standoff continued for nearly three hours, with people at the scene repeatedly trying to convince the teenager to step away from danger. A video from the incident showed people attempting to reason with Kunal. One man told him, “Live for your mother,” to which the teenager replied, “No, I have to die. That remains the only way.” Sanjay Jadhav, a former sarpanch of Tisgaon village, was among those who tried to persuade him. He said locals even offered to arrange an iPhone 15 Pro for the teenager. Jadhav said, “We pleaded with him a lot, that he should look at his mother, that he shouldn’t jump, that he was educated and had a future ahead of him. We made every appeal we could.” Around 1 pm, Kunal’s father approached him and attempted to bring him away from the edge. During the intervention, both lost their balance and fell into the gorge. Kunal’s mother, Sangeeta, witnessed what happened and subsequently also died after falling from the hill. All three family members died at the scene, police said. Their bodies were recovered and sent for post-mortem examinations. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway. The incident was witnessed by local residents and tourists, while parts of the attempts to persuade Kunal were recorded on video. Police have not confirmed reports suggesting that the teenager may have been dealing with depression.

A couple and their 19-year-old son fell to their deaths from a hill while the parents attempted to stop the teenager from committing suicide in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district on Friday, police said. The tragedy unfolded in the Tisgaon area under Waluj MIDC in the afternoon, an official said. According to the police, Kunal Murlidhar Chandgude (19) went up the hill around 10 am, allegedly intending to commit suicide following a dispute with his parents about wanting a mobile phone. The parents, Murlidhar Chandgude (48) and Sangita Chandgude, residents of the Zalta Phata area of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, arrived there to stop him. An official said police and villagers tried to convince Kunal not to jump, and the fire brigade was also called in, and they tried to place a net below. But the teen kept changing his position. Even as his father tried to console and convince him, Kunal jumped, and the father went after him, falling to his death. Horrified, the mother also jumped off the hill and died, the official said. The bodies were recovered by the police and were sent for further formalities, he added.

Eight students were killed after a Tamil Nadu-registered seven-seater car crashed into a parked goods lorry on National Highway 66 in Kerala's Thrissur district late on Friday night. The accident took place around 11.40 pm on September 4 at Panambikkunnu in Kaipamangalam. According to preliminary information, the car was travelling from Guruvayur towards Kodungallur when it collided with the rear of the parked lorry. The lorry was reportedly stationed near a diversion on an under-construction stretch of National Highway 66. Traveling at high speed, the driver apparently missed a diversion barricade and slammed into the parked lorry's rear, as per media reports. Six students died instantly at the scene, while two others were declared dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital, according to police. Police confirmed that all eight occupants,young men from Tamil Nadu believed to be engineering students, died in the crash. Authorities recovered student identification cards from the vehicle, with preliminary reports indicating they attended an engineering college in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu. The impact of the collision was severe, leaving the car badly mangled. Rescue personnel faced difficulties in removing the occupants from the wreckage and had to cut open the vehicle to retrieve the bodies. Fire and rescue personnel, police officials and local residents were involved in the rescue operation. The bodies were subsequently shifted to the mortuary at Thrissur Medical College for further procedures and identification. Preliminary reports also said CCTV footage captured the car travelling along the highway shortly before the crash. The footage and other evidence are expected to form part of the investigation into the circumstances leading to the collision, according to the reports. Police have initiated an investigation into the accident. Authorities are examining the road conditions, the positioning of the parked lorry and other factors that may have contributed to the crash.

A woman died and her husband was severely injured after a speeding car rammed their scooter at Mamledar Wadi Junction in Mumbai's Malad West on Sunday night, police said. According to Malad police, the car, allegedly being driven rashly by 65-year-old Krishna Chamankar, rammed into the couple’s Activa. The accident took place around 8pm, when Mayank Shah, 35, and his wife, Priyanka, who was a lawyer, had stopped at a traffic signal while returning home through Malad Subway, police said. According to Malad police, the car, an MG Windsor allegedly being driven rashly by Chamankar, rammed into the couple’s Activa. Mayank suffered serious injuries, while Priyanka was critically injured and later died during treatment at a hospital. The impact did not end with the couple’s scooter. Police said the car went on to hit three autorickshaws, injuring five passengers. Some of the injured suffered serious injuries, while others sustained minor injuries. A complaint was lodged by Mayank’s brother, Manthan Devji Shah, 35, following which Malad police registered a case against Chamankar under Sections 106(1), 281 and 125(A)(B) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Police said Chamankar was medically examined before being arrested. According to police sources, Chamankar’s name has also figured in a high-profile legal case. He is one of the developers who, along with his brother Prasanna Chamankar, was named in the alleged Maharashtra Sadan scam case linked to former Maharashtra PWD minister and NCP veteran Chhagan Bhujbal, police sources said. In September 2025, the Bombay High Court quashed the money-laundering case registered against the brothers and their firm, K S Chamankar Enterprises, by the Enforcement Directorate. Meanwhile, Priyanka’s cousin, Pravin Cheda, has raised questions over the treatment allegedly given to Chamankar at Malad police station following the accident. In a letter to senior police officers, Cheda alleged that Chamankar was allowed to use his mobile phone inside the lock-up and was given preferential treatment. Cheda further alleged that around 1.20am, a woman police officer from Versova arrived at the station and, citing a medical check-up, took Chamankar out of the lock-up and seated him in an air-conditioned room at the rear of the station. He has sought an independent inquiry into the conduct of the police personnel allegedly involved and demanded suspension and departmental action against those found responsible. He has also sought strict prosecution of Chamankar in accordance with the gravity of the offence.

A 25-year-old man was allegedly murdered in Sarola village of Bhor taluka on Wednesday night, August 27, over suspicion of an affair. The attack, which took place around 9 pm, was captured on a nearby CCTV camera. The deceased has been identified as Amar Pawar. The accused, identified as Deepak Manohar Pal, a native of Uttar Pradesh, allegedly suspected that his wife was in a relationship with Pawar, which police believe may have led to the attack. According to the police complaint, Pawar was walking along the Sarola-Veer road with the accused’s wife and her minor daughter when Deepak allegedly arrived at the spot. The accused reportedly approached Pawar from behind and attacked him with a sharp weapon near the house of Mahesh Dhadve. Pawar sustained multiple stab wounds to his neck and throat and died at the spot, according to the complaint. Following the incident, Pawar’s cousin, Amit Jagnnath Pawar, lodged a complaint at Rajgad Police Station. Police have registered a case against Deepak Manohar Pal under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 4(27) of the Arms Act. The accused is currently absconding, and police teams are conducting raids to trace and arrest him. Investigators are examining CCTV footage and other evidence to establish the sequence of events and determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged dispute. Police are also probing the basis of the accused’s suspicion regarding his wife’s alleged relationship with Pawar. The investigation is underway, and further action will be taken based on the findings.

"What kind of punishment lasts for two hours inside a room," asks the father of a 16-year-old girl, who jumped from the third floor of a school building in Haryana's Faridabad and died. The incident took place on Tuesday at the Navodaya Vidya Niketan Senior Secondary School. The girl's father, Pramod Kumar, has claimed that his daughter was punished for eating biryani and ordered to stand outside the classroom under the sun. The girl, Janvi, then went to the vice principal's room and returned after nearly two hours, according to CCTV footage accessed by Kumar. She then went straight to the third floor and jumped to her death. "My daughter's friend told us that they had eaten biryani at school, after which she was punished and told to stand outside the classroom. The school's CCTV footage shows that she went into the vice-principal's room at around 11 am and came out two hours later. No one knows what happened inside that room," said Kumar. "The CCTV shows Janvi coming out once or twice before going back into the vice-principal's room. She came out again at around 1:30 pm and then went straight to the third floor." When asked if Janvi had ever received punishment such as standing under the sun before, Kumar said "no". He further accused the school of "hiding its shortcomings" and informing the family late about the unfortunate incident. "Whenever anything happened at school, if she was unwell or there was any other issue, the school would call me immediately. But yesterday, they did not call me even once," Kumar said. Kumar alleged that the family was informed about their daughter jumping from the school building "at the last moment" and that the school administration left the hospital "without meeting" the parents. According to the school principal RK Sharma, Janvi went to the washroom on the third floor. Calling it an "outright lie", Kumar again questioned what happened inside the vice principal's room. "That is completely false... We checked the footage. She was inside for two hours. What kind of punishment was she given? We don't know what they did to her inside... They told us this (the alleged suicide attempt) only around 2:30 pm, after the school had closed, even though the incident had happened much earlier." The injured student was taken to a private hospital, from where she was referred to BK Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. The post-mortem examination is underway, and further action will be taken based on the report. According to the Station House Officer Sumir Singh, no complaint has been filed seeking for registering an FIR. However, an investigation into the matter is underway. "We have not found anything suspicious in the footage or any suspicious activity at the school," Singh told to media. "So far, there is nothing before us to suggest that she was punished for four hours." Speaking to media, a fellow parent, whose four children studied at the same school, claimed that the school is infamous for giving harsh punishments to children. "My children were asked to stand in the sun, thrashed and humiliated publicly for a delay in fee payment," she said. Janvi's father, Kumar, has called for a thorough investigation and demanded a post-mortem at AIIMS hospital.

Tisgaon sarpanch Sanjay Jadhav was among those desperately trying to talk 18-year-old Kunal Chandwade out of jumping off Khavdya Dongar in Maharashtra's Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. "We kept telling him to think of his mother and not take the step," Jadhav said. When pleading failed, Jadhav offered to give Kunal an iPhone to keep him engaged and persuade him to step away from the edge. But the teenager appeared determined. "There is no solution now. There is only one solution," he told Jadhav, according to the sarpanch. As the three-hour standoff entered its final moments, Kunal's father Murlidhar moved towards him, hoping to pull him back. Kunal suddenly jumped as his father tried to catch him, and both fell to their deaths. Kunal, Murlidhar and Kunal's mother Sangeeta died within moments of each other at around 1pm on Friday, turning the rescue operation into a tragedy. Police said Kunal had reached the hill around 10am and remained close to the edge despite repeated appeals from his parents, villagers and rescuers to move to safety. Fire brigade teams deployed safety nets below the steep cliff, but their efforts were complicated as Kunal kept shifting his position along the edge. According to local residents, Kunal had been distressed after his parents refused to buy him an expensive mobile phone. Once his family learnt that he had gone to the hill, his parents rushed to the spot. Residents of Tisgaon, personnel from MIDC Waluj police station and fire brigade teams also joined the rescue effort. For nearly three hours, Sangeeta continued talking to her son and urging him to return to safety. Villagers also tried different ways to persuade him to step back from the edge. Jadhav said the teenager remained adamant despite the attempts to reason with him. His offer to give Kunal an iPhone was also intended to keep him talking and buy time for rescuers to bring him to safety. Police are now trying to establish exactly what happened in the final moments. "We are trying to establish the exact sequence of events," police commissioner Pravin Pawar said. DCP Ratnakar Navale said the family belonged to Dhangar Pimpalgaon village in Jalna district. Relatives took the bodies to their village after police recovered them from the difficult terrain. The bodies were sent for postmortem, while investigators are recording statements from people who witnessed the incident.

A 28-year-old businessman in Faridabad died by suicide inside his shop on Sunday after hanging himself. Before taking the extreme step, he posted a video on Instagram in which he accused his wife and her family of mentally harassing him. Police have launched an investigation and are also examining the allegations made in the video. In the Instagram video posted before his death, Rahul accused his wife Jyoti, his mother-in-law Veena, his father-in-law Bittu and his wife's sister Neetu of mentally harassing him. He claimed that despite doing all household chores, including sweeping and washing utensils, he was assaulted, and false cases were filed against him. He said he had been living under constant mental stress. Rahul also said in the video that his wife and her family were responsible for his death and should be punished according to the law. He further said that after his death, his property should go to his mother, sister and brothers. The victim, Rahul, had opened a garment shop around four months ago. According to police, Rahul met his mother at home on Sunday morning before leaving for his shop. A short while later, he hanged himself inside the shop. Police reached the spot after receiving information, took custody of the body and sent it to hospital for post-mortem. According to Rahul's family, he had married a woman named Jyoti in a love marriage around two years ago. They alleged that after the marriage, his wife did not want him to live with his parents, following which he started living separately. They said Rahul had recently opened his new garment shop. A family member, Amit, alleged that Rahul had been under severe mental stress due to harassment by his wife and her family. He claimed that Rahul's wife had also filed a case against him, which added to his stress. The family further alleged that Rahul was not even allowed to meet his parents. Investigating officer Sanjay Kumar said police have sent the body for post-mortem and are investigating the case. He said the viral social media video has been included in the investigation and that the allegations made in it will be verified during the probe.

In a shocking incident, a 20-year-old female bartender was stabbed to death allegedly by her male colleague following a workplace argument, the police said, adding that they arrested the accused after a clip from the bar, purportedly showing the fatal assault, went viral on social media on Monday. The incident was reported at a watering hole near Deendayal Chowk within the Gohalpur police station limits of Jabalpur. The deceased bartender was identified as Muskan Chaudhary, while the accused, Pawan Verma, was employed at the bar as a cook. According to police, the two got into an argument over a work-related issue around 4.30 pm. Their colleagues stepped in during the heated exchange, managing to calm frayed tempers. However, the dispute flared up again sometime later, according to local reports. Pawan allegedly attacked Muskan with a knife, stabbing her multiple times. As she collapsed with grievous injuries, her colleagues rushed her to a nearby hospital. However, the doctors there declared her dead on arrival. The police said they were examining the purported murder video for further leads in the probe. Additional SP Ayush Jakhar said the accused was booked for murder. Multiple police teams, earlier, carried out searches and raids at suspected hideouts before nabbing and placing the accused under custody. The police conducted a 'panchnama' (a legal document where facts, observations and evidence collected from a crime scene are logged) and sent the body for post-mortem. The sleuths said further probe was underway to establish the exact sequence of events leading up to the crime.

A 42-year-old man, against whom a video alleging misbehaviour with a woman passenger on a bus had surfaced on social media, was found hanging dead at his residence on Sunday, police said. The deceased was identified as Deepak U, a native of #Puthiyara, who was residing at #Govindhapuram, #Kozhikode. According to police, around 7 am, Deepak’s parents knocked on the bedroom door to wake him up, but there was no response despite repeated attempts. They later entered the room with the help of neighbours and found him hanging from a ceiling fan, police said. The police were immediately informed and, upon reaching the house, confirmed the death. Relatives said Deepak was employed at a textile firm and had travelled to #Kannur on Friday in connection with his work. On the same day, a woman passenger travelling on the bus in which Deepak was seated had recorded a video alleging that he misbehaved with her, a relative told reporters. The video was widely circulated on social media and had come to Deepak’s notice, police said. According to relatives, Deepak denied the allegation and had been under severe mental distress since the video surfaced. The medical college police have registered a case of unnatural death and initiated an investigation. Police said a preliminary inquiry indicated it was a suspected case of suicide, and the probe would also examine the circumstances surrounding the circulation of the video.
