In light of the grotesque misrepresentations about me, and misquotes arising from an in-conversation in Melbourne the other week, I am taking the opportunity to publish the audio recording of my response in full. A self-described journalist (lying toad) in Australia purported to claim on the basis of this response that I supposedly acknowledged I couldn’t explain the legal nuances why settlements are not illegal and why Judea ought not to be ethnically cleansed of its Jews. What a joke. When they lose the argument, this is what they resort to. Thank you again to Melbourne for such a wonderful, warm Australian welcome.

A concerning conversation with the Deputy Foreign Minister of Norway Andreas Kravik Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik, about Norway’s proposed trade ban singling out Jews. He wouldn’t answer the direct question about whether Jewish-run businesses employing local Arabs would be exempt, but he was clear that the intention was to target the Jews, whom he considers to be “illegal” in areas including Judea and Jerusalem. The fact that the political rhetoric underpinning this initiative is intended to lead to criminal sanctions is mind-blowing. Far more also needs to be done to educate Norwegians about the potential serious implications for Norway of breaching international trade law and US anti-boycott law arising from these disgraceful proposals. When the Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband spreads false stories about the Jews, he is guilty of antisemitic blood libel and fuels Jew Hate. Instead of spreading "stories" which propagate Hamas propaganda, he should take a moment to educate himself and look at the evidence. There is no blockage of medical assistance by Israel. It is Hamas that continues to abuse Palestinians, now with this government's encouragement. Ambassador Mike Huckabee is right; the Jew-hatred of this government knows no boundaries or facts.

Dear Iain, I would encourage you to listen back to the clip before continuing to misrepresent it. It was a year ago, so perhaps you should be forgiven. I certainly didn’t insult anyone, unless you consider the truth to be insulting? It is possible that Michael Mansfield shares such a belief - it is he who rudely left a conversation on the radio, seemingly unable to stomach being corrected on the law. I don’t tend to engage on X, because it is not the best use of time, but I make an exception here, in light of David’s valiant efforts and since it is a medium in which you can’t cut me off - it seems like a good opportunity to set the record straight. Your earlier guest had misled your audience when he claimed that Israel was losing its democracy. Despite the passage of time since our conversation, you can see that Israel is still a thriving democracy and is preparing itself for yet another democratic election. The only real democracy in the Middle East. True, not a high bar, but Israel's democratic practises can also put many European countries to shame. It is a pity that you did not allow me the time during the program to explain this. As we progressed in the conversation, you gave an example which was wholly inappropriate: you suggested that you might be barred from entering due to having criticised Israel. I said that misrepresented what these two MPs had done, and you cut me off. Had you not done so, I would have told you that your example flies in the face of the fact that Israel has free press and free speech. It is a place where everybody can - and many do - criticise Israel, its Government, its Prime Minister or any other body or person. All you would have to do is turn on Israeli TV (with subtitles?) and this would be evident to you. What was even more egregious, however, was the suggestion that the falsehoods these MPs had told immigration officials, and their campaign for BDS - a vehicle for incitement and the attempted destruction of Israel - is somehow comparable with “criticism”. Immigration turned these politicians away under a framework parallel to the one we deploy in the UK.

Addressing the diplomatic row over Area E1 and the proposed UK trade ban with areas of Israeli settlement in disputed territories, Jerusalem and Judea and Sameria/West Bank, with David Ross. The deeply concerning rhetoric from UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband MP misstates international law, ignores the UK’s real international law obligations and its responsibilities under trade agreements and falls foul of UK-endorsed international agreements, including the Oslo Accords. It also misrepresents the factual position I witnessed on the ground last week.

Now that the real culprits of any shortages in Gaza have been admitted – Hamas – where is the international outcry? Israel’s facilitation of Aid into Gaza has exceeded the needs of the population and surpassed the requirements of international law. Attempts internationally to blame Israel and whitewash Hamas do an outrageous disservice to Arab Palestinian civilians.

Is Amnesty International simply illiterate, or do they just think they can keep getting away with the same lie? There was never any ICJ finding of "plausible risk". It is invented. The Court used the standard language of plausible rights without any assessment of the claim, as the judge who wrote the order, Joan Donoghue, herself explained. Amnesty International

With the UK government reportedly considering new restrictions on trade with Israeli communities in Judea and Samaria (aka the "West Bank"), and where EU member states have debated similar proposals, I examine whether international law actually requires such measures, what the ICJ's Advisory Opinion does and does not say, and why so many political and media claims about Judea and Samaria get the law and the facts wrong. With David Ross, I explore the legal status of Israeli communities in Judea and Samaria, EU law, World Trade Organization rules, the Fourth Geneva Convention, the Oslo Accords, and whether proposed trade restrictions would ultimately harm the very Palestinian workers they are purportedly intended to help.
