Some of my storyboards from the opening of The Wild Robot. I liked the idea of the first shot in the film (after the pull-out from her eye) being Roz in a fetal position for "The Robot Hatches." But the idea got lost as it went through the production pipeline. I ended up using some stock photography and videos for some of the water in this scene. I think because the environment was such a character for us in these opening scenes. The photography seemed to help me to sell the contrast between Roz and the wilderness.

It’s been 14 years since this little reel of mine went viral, and helped me get my first job at Dreamworks. I can’t wait to see what Jon Chu has done with the live action movie. I also would still love to see an animated version. I think the medium has so much to give to that story. Just throwing that out there to the Western Sky of the Universe. Happy #Wicked Week!

Some more storyboards from an early version of one of our toughest scenes to crack on The Wild Robot: Sequence 250-The Forest. This was from a version where there was very little dialogue, and we just leaned into the silent wonder and beauty of Roz discovering the forest. The imagery was super compelling, but in the end it wasn’t giving us the insight into Roz’s character that we needed to service the rest of the story.
