A quick video of the most beautiful mural I’ve seen, The Dream Garden by Maxfield Parrish (in collaboration with Louis Comfort Tiffany), inside the historic Curtis Building in Philadelphia. This breathtaking glass mosaic, installed in 1916, features hundreds of thousands of irreplaceable tesserae in over 260 color tones, weighing over 4 tons and almost not surviving. It’s a perfect escape for a moment as one goes through the busy streets of Philadelphia, but then again, anyone who knows Maxwell Parrish knows how ethereal he is.

Nestled in the heart of historic Philadelphia, this two-acre Colonial-era cemetery holds the final resting places of over 4,000 souls, including Benjamin Franklin and four other signers of the Declaration of Independence: Francis Hopkinson, Joseph Hewes, George Ross, and Dr. Benjamin Rush. From Revolutionary leaders and to Yellow Fever victims and everyday Philadelphians, these weathered stones whisper stories of courage. Toss a penny on Ben Franklin’s grave (a tradition honoring “a penny saved is a penny earned”). The burial grounds first opened in 1719, and today, they’re rather peaceful amid the city bustle, open daily for self-guided or guided tours.

The Battle of Chancellorsville occurred from 30 April - 6 May, 1863. The battle was a surprise victory for the Confederacy and resulted in the death of Stonewall Jackson and the removal of Union General Hooker. On this day, 160 years ago: April 9, 1865 — After four long years, the American Civil War, the bloodiest conflict in U.S. history, effectively ended when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. Over 620,000 lives were lost. Families were divided. But at Appomattox, there was no celebration. No grand speeches. No victory parades. Just a quiet surrender in a parlor. Today, Appomattox is a historic site that provides a glimpse into 1866. Some of the buildings are original, others built after the surrender. My video does not show all the buildings open for touring. You can visit the sites of Grant’s and Lee's Headquarters down the road on either side. It remains a quiet little town and is worth a visit.
