In the 2006 film Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, the opening scenes set in Borat’s fictional Kazakh village were actually filmed in Glod, a small, impoverished village in Romania. The villagers, many of whom are Roma, were reportedly misled into believing they were participating in a documentary about their lives. They were paid minimal amounts—some as little as $3 to $5—and were not provided with formal contracts. After the film’s release, the villagers felt humiliated by their portrayal and sought legal action against the filmmakers, alleging they were depicted as incestuous and ignorant. The lawsuits were ultimately dismissed due to insufficient evidence.
