This was a tough one - and very difficult to observe the pain and suffering on admission. 😢This fast-growing TB filly developed a severe bilateral tendon contracture this summer that took a terrible turn and she was referred last week for any possible option. Honestly, it was either euthanasia or a salvage surgical approach - that was IT. She could not stand more than 2 minutes, had many body sores, could not keep herself fed or hydrated, and was in great distress. We considered her an emergency case, and did some aggressive surgery on both limbs, applied cast splints, special shoes, and careful pain management. Remarkably, she is a different filly 3 days later. We still have some work to do but what a difference - today she stood up all day and comfortably ate and drank - a very happy and content filly 😅

We are absolutely heartbroken to report that we lost this lovely filly late last week. Orthopedically, she was progressing in fantastic fashion and was a very happy horse. However, she developed unusual low-grade colic signs Wednesday morning and things did not make sense in our colic work-up. We shipped her that afternoon to our colleagues Penn Vet New Bolton Center to do a deep-dive with diagnostics and the filly quickly crashed and expired shortly thereafter. Her post-mortem exam revealed she had multiple abscesses (likely hidden and dormant for months) within the vasculature of her small intestines and one large abscess had burst, causing acute septic shock. We just cannot believe it - after all the hurdles she overcame - to lose her to a silent timebomb like that. Does not seem fair at all - our only solace was that she was a happy, content filly for her time here with us and it was a joy to witness her turnaround once we addressed her severe tendon issues. She was much-loved by her owner and all of us here and it was a real privilege to be her caregivers 💔

Just like a human can take an awkward step and sprain or dislocate one's ankle, so can a horse - EXCEPT... a horse is over 1000 lbs running at 35 mph - whether racing or running full-tilt in a field - the physics can result in a catastrophic injury. This TB filly severely dislocated/fractured her RH ankle during a workout last week, requiring a very complicated life-saving fetlock fusion called an arthrodesis. 🪛🔩Fortunately, she is blessed with a great mind and temperament and has cleared many critical hurdles thus far. So far so good 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

A very challenging case went home this week after a 3-month stay and there was not a dry eye in the clinic!🥹This beloved 22-yr-old retired TB broodmare (YES, a TB!) had a severe LF lameness for over a year related to a chronic breakdown of the soft tissue supports of the pastern ("XYZ" ligaments). This resulted in subluxation of both her pastern and coffin joints. A tough one but by fusing her pastern joint surgically, and putting things back in reasonable alignment, we could then work on rehabbing her sagging support ligaments, resulting eventually in a sound and happy mare. The owner asked us to post this story so others would be aware that this kind of surgical option exists - this mare means the world to her and if she had known this was possible, she would have done things much sooner. This mare is just a sweetheart and all went smoothly - she is back home now with her 27-yr-old best friend🥰

This big beautiful TB filly incurred serious injuries to both of her knees while on the lead in the stretch of a race this weekend- an extremely rare occurrence to experience bilateral slab fractures😱. Fortunately she had immediate expert care from her jockey, the outriders, attending vets, etc and shipped in to us safely. A lot of arthroscopic clean-up and some hardware added to boot and 24-hrs later we have a much happier horse who will go on now and lead a very comfortable life as a broodmare 🔩🔩🔩

A “breakdown”injury is life-threatening but many can be complicated + $$$ surgery so a big commitment. This 5yr TB was avg athlete but dearly beloved by owners❤️.A perfect patient-he’s at 30 days today and ankle fusing nicely, so on his way to new life!🙌🏻

A true test of ultimate patience and faith by this TB gelding’s owners…this wonderful racehorse came to us in Nov 24 for 2nd opinion.Euthanasia had been recommended by another specialist for a very complicated stifle injury-a nasty joint infection combined w/a very painful bone contusion/cyst. He was crippled at the walk for months but an incredibly cooperative patient. At times, we really couldn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel but he made us keep trying. Intense medical treatment, physical therapy, and lots and lots of time. The owners kept saying “let’s give him another month” and then another, and another until he began to turn the corner! His X-rays filled in, he started using his leg, and exercise was gradually increased until….THIS! He is sound, happy, and finally going home this week🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 WOW #powerofpatience

Ahhh the joys of BEFORE and AFTER fracture repair🤪This mare sustained a very serious spiral fracture of RF cannon bone but 12 screws and a bone plate later she is good to go.The hardware will be removed in 60 days and prognosis is actually excellent for any athletic endeavor 🙌🏻
