This big beautiful TB filly incurred serious injuries to both of her knees while on the lead in the stretch of a race this weekend- an extremely rare occurrence to experience bilateral slab fractures😱. Fortunately she had immediate expert care from her jockey, the outriders, attending vets, etc and shipped in to us safely. A lot of arthroscopic clean-up and some hardware added to boot and 24-hrs later we have a much happier horse who will go on now and lead a very comfortable life as a broodmare 🔩🔩🔩

A “breakdown”injury is life-threatening but many can be complicated + $$$ surgery so a big commitment.This 5yr TB was avg athlete but dearly beloved by owners❤️.A perfect patient-he’s at 30 days today and ankle fusing nicely, so on his way to new life!🙌🏻

A true test of ultimate patience and faith by this TB gelding’s owners…this wonderful racehorse came to us in Nov 24 for 2nd opinion.Euthanasia had been recommended by another specialist for a very complicated stifle injury-a nasty joint infection combined w/a very painful bone contusion/cyst. He was crippled at the walk for months but an incredibly cooperative patient. At times, we really couldn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel but he made us keep trying. Intense medical treatment, physical therapy,and lots and lots of time. The owners kept saying “let’s give him another month” and then another, and another until he began to turn the corner! His X-rays filled in, he started using his leg, and exercise was gradually increased until….THIS! He is sound, happy, and finally going home this week🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 WOW #powerofpatience

We repair many fractures here but hindlimb spiral fractures have our respect like no other!😱 They are very tenuous and prone to catastrophe if any glitch in the whole process -from shipping and arrival, to surgery, and on thru recovery. It is a real team approach w/no room for error. This STB mare had a severe spiral fracture of her LH cannon and was exquisitely painful-but a perfect patient. Fortunately all went perfectly and she returned home today with an excellent prognosis for life and athletics🤩Recent advances in imaging and repair techniques (the LCP 'locking' plate in this case!) have made us all better horse surgeons the world over....

Ahhh the joys of BEFORE and AFTER fracture repair🤪This mare sustained a very serious spiral fracture of RF cannon bone but 12 screws and a bone plate later she is good to go.The hardware will be removed in 60 days and prognosis is actually excellent for any athletic endeavor 🙌🏻

Phew been a busy week! 😅Very satisfying to send this lovely TB colt home today.He sustained a very serious spiraling condylar fx to his RH last week.These are very complicated fxs and can propagate or catastrophically fail.The newer LCP (locking compression) bone plate has been a game-changer for these and allows us to compress the fx while providing very strong support (like an external fixator bracing the bone)🔩🔩It will come out in 60 days and he will have no athletic limitations - very good racing prognosis 🐎
