New footage has emerged of young hikers running away from the origin of the Palisades Fire off the Temescal Trail. “Dude that’s right where we were standing.” While placing no blame on these individuals, I think it’s important that’s these kids talk to investigators about what they saw that day on the trail. LAFD 🔥

From a Canadian firefighter who knows what’s going on: #canada #wildfire #smoke (Worth the read) “I know you may know, but people need to know and understand that most Canadian wildfire management agencies have fire “zonation” policies similar to Alaska. This means in large areas of their jurisdictions, especially in the northern part of the country, wildfires are left to run there natural course w little or no direct action or suppression. We’ll protect values at risk, ie. infrastructure, communities, critical habitat or culturally significant features on the landscape, we’ll map them and maybe try to burn them to natural barrier, fight one flank and let the rest roll (limited action) but we are not putting them out. On many of the fires we don’t even try. A number of these fires are huge boreal gobblers (I am currently assigned to a 250,000 ha fire, well over 600,000 acres and you could fit the org. chart on one side of a beer can). The only thing that is going to put out this fire out and many across the country is winter, 5 months from now. It’s going to be a long, smoky summer for everyone. You have a wide reach, it would be great if you can help people understand these dynamics in the Canadian wildfire scene when they’re bitching about the smoke. Cheers 🍻 and thanks.” Pretty decent picture of what’s going on. Thanks for the insight. In the industry we call this letting a fire “Do its thing”. It’s especially common in these vast boreal forests. Siberia does the same thing. Identify hazards and values at risk, mitigate, let it go. Cheers.

Footage of the initial start of the fires in Lahaina, Maui. #hawaii #wildfire No official cause has been released yet but class action lawsuits have already been opened by multiple law firms, suing the local utility and power companies for their roll in the tragedy. The class action lawsuit alleges that downed power lines that MECO, HECO, HELCO, and HEI owned and operated caused the fire. “The utilities also failed to deenergize their power lines prior to the fire, despite warnings days before that high winds from Hurricane Dora would create "high fire danger." On the day of the fire, the National Weather Service issued a High Wind Warning and Red Flag Warning.” There is still a lot to be determined with this fire, but it’s clear the devastation to the community will be felt for years. The death toll is now up to 80 people. This will likely rise.

Hurricanes and wildfire: #hawaii #maui #wildfire #LahainaFire The winds brought the power poles and transformers down, that sparked fires, communications went down, then 80MPH gusts fanned the flames across the landscape. A perfect storm… but why?! If you look at the National Interagency Fire Center’s Predictive Services, which we have been covering, they knew Hawaii would be ready for significant fire growth as far back at Spring. “El Niño will be the driving factor.” There was a La Niña/El Niño switch this spring… El Niño has developed in the equatorial Pacific Ocean, and rapid warming continues in much of the ENSO region, especially in the central Pacific with continued anomalous warmth off the coast of South America. Above normal sea surface temperatures are observed in all ENSO regions. Most forecast guidance depicts continued warming through summer, with El Niño conditions forecast to continue into winter. The Climate Prediction Center forecasts a greater than 95% chance of El Niño conditions continuing into winter, with a 56% chance of a strong El Niño developing this fall. Other teleconnection patterns, such as the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO), Pacific Decadal Oscillation, and Pacific-North American Pattern may influence weather and climate during the outlook period, but El Niño will be the main driver…

California: A wall of fire from the Palisades Fire. Multiple air tankers are now overhead as well as contracted aircraft from Canada. #wildfire #cafire #cawx Residents at the top of Palisades Drive are being asked to shelter in place due to block roads. Multiple cars have been abandoned in the middle of the escape route roads. This is a wake up call to California communities. 📷 : Andrew Hires

Oregon: An update from the Pine Mountain Fire in Deschutes county, multiple crews have arrived on scene including Wolf Creek, Redmond, Lakeview, and Rogue River Hotshots. Multiple aircraft are on scene as well, both fixed winged tankers, with a Type 1 helicopter conducting bucket work. Currently, westerly winds are moving the fire away from the Pine Mountain Observatory, a University of Oregon facility with research grade telescopes. Boots on the ground told me they have decent black to the North from a previous burn, and a fire scar to the east they may be able to tie it into. Last updated acreage still 1,500 acres, but may be larger.

Colorado: There is a new start burning in Clear Creek County, Colorado, in the town of Silver Plume. Resources have arrived on scene and additional resources have been requested. Colorado remains under red flag warnings. It’s really dry in many places across the west.

Utah: This is probably the craziest “Firenado” I’ve ever seen. This off the Deer Creek Fire today, near La Sal, which saw very extreme fire behavior leading to crews pulling back to safety zones and further evacuations. The fire was last mapped at 8,300 acres, but has since grown quite a bit. Thanks to the subscriber who shared this insane footage from Utah. Biggest “firewhirl” I’ve seen in a very long time.

California: Footage from inside the Pepperdine University Library as the Franklin Fire moved it’s way upslope in Malibu. Students remained safe inside. #wildfire #franklinfire #cafire #cawx The fire continues to burn this morning. I’ve worked on Malibu fires years ago. When our shot crew arrived, we were assigned structure protection around orange groves and massive homes while residents evacuated their horses and themselves. The traffic in the tight road systems was a mess. There’s a KSL news interview of us out there floating around.

Arizona: While the focus has been on California, Arizona popped a few fires the last 24 hours as well. This is the Cattle Fire outside of Yuma. Incredibly active initial attack, but crews were able to quickly bring containment to 50%. It was determined to be human caused, they also had the Ranch Fire in the same area that is now 65% contained. The cause of that fire in undetermined. Thanks to the subscriber who shared this view of the Cattle Fire initial attack. 🙏
