Canada: A wildfire has just broken out in Alberta on the Canadian Forces Base in Wainwright. Both the Prime Minister and Premier have made statements saying a “serious and major incident occurred on the base, with a fast moving fire starting.” Medivac ships are flying into the area, and the official Prime Minister page is calling it a tragedy. The local community is being evacuated, and a large firefighter response is underway. Something big must have happened to cause this fire to get such a reaction from both the Prime Minister and Premier, so quickly. Reports of major explosions. Video from Madison Keller

New Start, California: The Cooley Fire, on the Mendocino and Sonoma county line, is an interesting fire that’s becoming more active this afternoon. It started as a private property prescribed burn. The burn was fully approved, but got out of containment lines, and was declared a wildfire. Air Attack is now overhead, and has requested two Type 1 helicopters. Cal Fire units have also responded. Currently 78 degrees with 19% RH. More on this and the other California fires on today’s show.

From a Canadian firefighter who knows what’s going on: #canada #wildfire #smoke (Worth the read) “I know you may know, but people need to know and understand that most Canadian wildfire management agencies have fire “zonation” policies similar to Alaska. This means in large areas of their jurisdictions, especially in the northern part of the country, wildfires are left to run there natural course w little or no direct action or suppression. We’ll protect values at risk, ie. infrastructure, communities, critical habitat or culturally significant features on the landscape, we’ll map them and maybe try to burn them to natural barrier, fight one flank and let the rest roll (limited action) but we are not putting them out. On many of the fires we don’t even try. A number of these fires are huge boreal gobblers (I am currently assigned to a 250,000 ha fire, well over 600,000 acres and you could fit the org. chart on one side of a beer can). The only thing that is going to put out this fire out and many across the country is winter, 5 months from now. It’s going to be a long, smoky summer for everyone. You have a wide reach, it would be great if you can help people understand these dynamics in the Canadian wildfire scene when they’re bitching about the smoke. A perfect storm… but why?! If you look at the National Interagency Fire Center’s Predictive Services, which we have been covering, they knew Hawaii would be ready for significant fire growth as far back at Spring. “El Niño will be the driving factor.” There was a La Niña/El Niño switch this spring… El Niño has developed in the equatorial Pacific Ocean, and rapid warming continues in much of the ENSO region, especially in the central Pacific with continued anomalous warmth off the coast of South America. Above normal sea surface temperatures are observed in all ENSO regions. Most forecast guidance depicts continued warming through summer, with El Niño conditions forecast to continue into winter. The Climate Prediction Center forecasts a greater than 95% chance of El Niño conditions continuing into winter, with a 56% chance of a strong El Niño developing this fall. Other teleconnection patterns, such as the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO), Pacific Decadal Oscillation, and Pacific-North American Pattern may influence weather and climate during the outlook period, but El Niño will be the main driver…

Montana: Beaverhead County Sheriff has issued a GO NOW evacuation order for Elkhorn Hotsprings and Maverick Mountain, including all communities south to Shale Creek and Clark Creek on the north end of Grasshopper Valley due to increased activity on the Sand Creek and Bobcat Lakes Fires. Both are burning on the Beaverhead Deerlodge National Forest; the Sand Creek is now 8,900 acres, and the Bobcat Lakes is 5,513 acres. Firefighters are prioritizing structure protection as additional firefighting resources continue to arrive. Red Flag conditions remain over the fire areas.

The view of the South Fork Fire from Crawford, Nebraska this evening. This is some crazy fire behavior. Nebraska has seen the most active and largest wildfires in the nation this year, and it doesn’t look like it’s stopping. Residents surrounding Crawford are evacuating, and ranchers are trying to get their cattle to safe locations. The fire is now over 16,000 acres. Crews and aviation teamed up bring the fire to 10% containment as of this afternoon. The north side of the fire is looking good, with crews continuing to make progress and strengthen containment efforts. The southern side remains more challenging, with firefighters and incident management worked this morning to identify opportunities to connect existing lines and “put the pieces together” to increase containment. Logistical issues are stacking up with Caches running out of supplies and transport issues as well. I cover all of this on tomorrow’s Substack podcast episode. The Cottonwood Fire is a Great Basin monster. The fire is now estimated at 2,000+ acres, and it looks like it’s all of that and possibly more. At this time, all residents and visitors from Hi-Lo Cabins up to Kent Lake have been evacuated. Crews will be taking water from the Pressurized Irrigation pond. Due to this, Beaver City is asking that there is No Watering from the Pressurized Irrigation System until further notice. This is the Brewer Fire burning in Jefferson county, Oregon. 500+ acres, and she’s gone. The Kaiser Canyon Fire in Okanogan county, Washington is 1,000 acres. The Neff Jones Fire is 1,500 acres and the Lyons Ferry Fire is 3,000 acres in Franklin county, Washington and active. The Crosswhite Fire is 4,667 acres and the Cove Creek Fire is 1,000 acres, both in Wheeler county, Oregon. The Lower Dry Creek Fire in Umatilla county, Oregon is 5,000 acres. The Hopkins Fire is 5,000+ acres and the Porcupine Ridge Fire is 1,000 acres, both in Gilliam county, Oregon. The Wilcox Fire in Sherman county, Oregon is 2,500 acres. And those are just the fires over 1k acres…. There are dozens more.

Video from Anna Johnston in Spokane, Washington shows traffic jammed up as residents continue to evacuate due to the Old Trails Fire. The fire continues to spot and grow due to very strong winds. The Dwight Merkel outdoor Sports complex that was full for Saturday activities has been forced to evacuate. Evacuations now run as far north as Rutter Parkway. This is a wildland urban interface nightmare. The fire is over 2,000 acres.

Fire resources from Los Pinos Fire Protection District, mutual aid resources, and utility crews responded, and the line was shut down. Crews then addressed the resulting timber fire. The cause of the explosion is not yet known, no injuries have been reported.

Maybe a slight issue with the doors after the drop is made? Or maybe just some residual retardant coming out. Either way, pretty incredible. The Palisades Fire is now 22% contained and the Eaton Fire has drastically increased containment to 55%. The Hurst Fire is basically wrapped up at 98% contained. New LEAVE NOW evacuation orders have gone out due to the 12,376 acre Gold Mountain Fire burning near Ouray, Colorado. The fire remains active and is pushing into these areas: EVACUATION ORDER in effect for the area East of US 550 north of County Road (CR) 8 and south of CR 8A east to the US Forest boundary south to CR8 B along Cow Creek. New LEAVE NOW evacuation orders have gone out due to the 12,376 acre Gold Mountain Fire burning near Ouray, Colorado. The fire remains active and is pushing into these areas: EVACUATION ORDER in effect for the area East of US 550 north of County Road (CR) 8 and south of CR 8A east to the US Forest boundary south to CR8 B along Cow Creek. Montana: A great view of Bridger Aerospace scoopers working the Bivens Creek Fire in Madison county, MT. A lot of progress is being made, the Fire is now 34% contained and sitting at 2,234 acres after crews have completed primary lines around the fire. Next door, the Cloudrest Fire is 2,629 acres and 12% contained as crews conduct defensive firing operations ahead of expected heavy rains. A cooling and wetting trend is expected the next few days across Montana before a warmer drier trend returns. Thanks to Bridger Aerospace for sharing!

The Old Trails Fire in Spokane, Washington will likely be the city’s worst disaster since the Great Fire (August 4, 1889), which destroyed 30 city blocks. Reports this evening of multiple neighborhoods with homes burning, and a massive fire and emergency response inside the city. The National Guard has been activated, and nearly 2,500 acres have been burned so far, punching right through parts of the city. Extreme fire weather continues through the weekend. Incredible footage from the Adams Complex Fires outside Kamloops, British Columbia. #canada #wildfire In the first video we see a “firenado” along the lake shore. The cool temperatures of the water combined with the convective heat of the fire created this incredible phenomenon. The second video shows the fire activity durning the daytime. In a press conference minutes ago, authorities said the Aspen Acres Fire is now 7 miles from Wetmore, Colorado, and now a mandatory evacuation is in effect for the Wetmore area. From Pueblo county line, to Mackenzie Junction, to Fremont county to the North. For an idea of how far this fire has run, the original evacuation shelter was in Wetmore… People are NOT being allowed into the fire area. The plan to asses homes lost has been postponed today due to fire activity. This fire is likely well over 40,000 acres now. Fire managers said they had to order a Team from Alaska due to other fires across the West utilizing a large number of resources. Red flag conditions persist over the fire area. 📷 Thomas Alvis

Residents lined the streets of Grand Junction, Colorado today as firefighters from the Forest Service, USWFS, and state resources escorted the fallen firefighters Emily Barker, Nick Hutcherson, and Sydney Watson in a procession. A moving show of support by the community. The Honor Guard led the procession today to return the fallen firefighters to their family and friends at the mortuary. They will not be forgotten.

I’ve received too many messages to ignore the obvious… It sounds like the Park Fire is totally f*cked. #cafire #cawx #wildfire #parkfire Numerous resources self demobed today after the fire jumped a 16 blade wide dozer push, that’s the footage below. I’ve been told another dozer burned up today, and the operator received burns to the face and neck. Multiple crew members got singed while trying to catch spots and hold the line. They were talking about suppression repair yesterday, and today they are worried about the fire pushing into Mineral. At least they have prepped around that community extensively. I’ve been told Heavy equipment is scattered and overhead doesn’t know what they got, and head fire is slamming dozer line that folks were told not to burn off. That’s very odd to not fire off dozer line when you expect head fire to slam into it. This fire started in the worst way… I’d hate to see it end in the worst way as well. Yes, this is a massive fire that is difficult to manage, totally understandable. But the flood of messages in my inbox tells me the Swiss Cheese model is starting to line up.
