I’ve always been clear: Houston follows local and state law. We are not ICE, and we do not enforce federal immigration law. Today, I joined a majority of City Council to pass a sensitive ordinance on immigration procedures. Staying focused on public safety not politics.

Zero tolerance for racism in Houston. The comments made by former officer Ashley Gonzalez were vile, unacceptable, and do not reflect the values of our city or the standards of HPD. She was terminated today. There is no place for hate in Houston.

At Council today, I reaffirmed Houston’s longstanding policy: we enforce state and local laws — not immigration laws. HPD does not ask for immigration status and only reports to agencies with active warrants. This has been our policy for years under previous administrations.

For years, Houston has had two MLK Day parades. Mayor Whitmire made it a priority to bring everyone together and unite the community. Last week, he announced that on January 19, 2026, the city will celebrate one parade honoring Dr. King. This is what a city for all looks like.

Given recent events, City of Houston understands but is disappointed President Donald J. Trump will not visit this week to assess Hurricane Beryl recovery. We are deeply grateful for the timely call from Mr. Biden after the storm, and his support is proving invaluable in addressing our long-term needs.
