An aerial look at Makoko, Lagos’ biggest floating slum as demolition continues and the community faces redevelopment. For decades, thousands built their lives on this waterfront. Today, the landscape is changing rapidly. As Lagos grows, the big question remains: Can redevelopment happen without erasing people and their history?

During the early challenges around the Dangote Refinery project in Lagos, the state didn’t look away. Former Gov. Babatunde Fashola personally engaged Ibeju-Lekki community leaders, addressed land and compensation issues, aligned host communities, and provided policy stability. Lagos didn’t just offer land, it offered governance, certainty, and speed. That is the “Lagos factor” many states still struggle to replicate when attracting big investments.

I followed the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway from Victoria Island all the way to Agerige in Ondo State — by car, by bike, and even along the Atlantic Ocean shoreline From smooth highways in Lagos to ongoing site clearing in Ogun and Ondo States, this journey shows the real progress on Nigeria’s biggest coastal road project. When fully connected, this highway will open up coastal communities and greatly improve access across the region. 🎥 Watch the full documentary here: 👉

Many people don’t know this, but before construction of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway began, a new Makoko-like settlement had already started forming along that corridor. The highway construction cleared that entire stretch, opening it up to what is now a beachfront. Some of the people still left are the ones seen around the coastal highway at night. If enforcement is not sustained, there’s a real risk of regrouping and the emergence of another informal settlement. The entire stretch now protected by shoreline works behind Orchid Road was once their settlement, as shown in the first video.

For decades, many federal roads in Ogun State were abandoned and left in terrible condition. Some became death traps. Others slowed businesses and economic growth across one of Nigeria’s biggest industrial states. But now, major reconstruction projects are ongoing across Ogun State From: ✅ Sango-Ota – Idi-Iroko Road ✅ Atan-Lusada-Agbara Road(Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway) ✅ Sagamu – Ijebu-Ode Road ✅ Sagamu – Papalanto Road ✅ Lagos – Abeokuta Expressway And even the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway passing through Ogun Waterside… Ogun State is witnessing some of Nigeria’s biggest infrastructure projects.

Those same roads you mentioned are currently under active reconstruction Sagamu–Benin, Benin–Sapele/Warri axis, and Benin–Asaba are all seeing major works on ground (as shown in the videos). The Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway isn’t replacing repairs on existing highways, both are happening at the same time. Development doesn’t have to be one over the other. Old roads can be fixed while new strategic corridors are built. That’s how infrastructure growth works. Now please answer this: which of these projects bears no economic value to the South-South if you truly care about the region?
