Right on cue, one stunned local says: “I mean, this is supposed to be a safe area.” Meanwhile, Mayor Brandon Johnson brags that last summer was Chicago’s safest in 60 years while rolling out his new 2026 Summer Safety Plan of youth jobs and safe spaces. At noon today, nearly 600 fed-up Illinoisans, including environmental advocates, faith leaders, students, business reps, consumer groups, and state legislators, will rally at the Lincoln Statue in Springfield demanding the POWER Act. This bill would force hyperscale data centers to pay for their own energy infrastructure, new clean power, and water usage instead of crushing Illinois families with higher electric bills from these unregulated power hogs. Champaign-Urbana students just woke up to a finals week nightmare. U of I postponed finals after Shiny Hunters ransomware took down Canvas, the platform every student uses for classes, assignments, and grades. Flights already booked. Campustown leases ending. The admins’ response? A vague “we’ll update you Sunday” email. The same Canvas chaos is hitting universities nationwide, including Illinois State and Lake Land College right here in central Illinois. These students already dealt with COVID disruptions and the Gaza protests and encampments. And now this right before finals? These kids really can’t catch a break.

Got to love how Brandon Johnson uses the biased machinery of Chicago media to his advantage. Yesterday, Heather Cherone gave Mayor Brandon Johnson a handy assist to state his case against ShotSpotter. Johnson opened his press conference by citing and praising left wing UChicago Justice Project’s report that claimed police response time on South and West Sides improved after ShotSpotter was disconnected. Right on cue, Heather Cherone asked Johnson his reaction to the report at his press conference, allowing Johnson to compliment UChicago Justice Project and, of course, thank Cherone her coverage of the story. Maybe Cherone should ask Johnson why Chicago spends $30M on the Mayor’s 150-man police officer detail, three times what was spent on ShotSpotter.

Chicago Public Schools just got another major break from the Illinois State Board of Education. Beginning with the 2026-2027 school year, schools will no longer be downgraded for chronic absenteeism, even though 40% of students miss 10% or more of school days without a valid excuse. Now students can skip class for protests and walkouts without it hurting their school’s rating. This follows the state’s decision last year to lower proficiency cut scores on standardized tests, instantly inflating reported reading and math proficiency rates with zero actual improvement in student performance. Ben Bradley claims this redesign of the school report card is not meant to lower standards and give more schools better grades. Claiming that removing penalties doesn’t lower standards is pure gaslighting. If we lower standards enough, we can just declare every school a smashing success. This is how Illinois pretends to improve education.

Chicago-area mom, Lindsay Pinchuk, is calling for lawsuits against CTU, CPS, and the city of Chicago after kids were pulled from class and bused to the May Day protests. CPS parents hired attorney Bill Quinlan and sent a formal demand letter, but no lawsuits have been filed yet. Lindsay is speaking out because she remembers what it was like to be taught how to think, not what to think. She shares her 8th-grade election project from 1992, which taught her how to research the issues, think critically, and form her own opinions. Who else misses the days when we didn’t know who our teachers voted for and we were actually taught to think for ourselves? Our kids today are being indoctrinated with a one-sided political agenda, and as she says, that is as anti-American as it gets.

He calls it a miracle, and is grateful to be alive. His message to the shooter who tried to murder him? “I’m sorry we failed you along the way. What support, what services do you need?” A victim apologizing to his would-be killer. This is the dangerous reality of zero accountability in Chicago. Victims are pushed to empathize with their attackers instead of demanding justice. We must demand real safety and accountability for our communities now.

Parents are outraged at a Gary Elementary School teacher in West Chicago over a two-word post. GO ICE allegedly caused so much fear that many students stayed home from school. Replace GO with a four-letter expletive and suddenly it’s free speech and everyone needs to calm down. This isn’t about protecting kids. It’s about whose speech gets protected.
