🚨 Today in Turkey, Instagram has been banned. As the Mayor of Istanbul, I strongly believe that communication bans do not benefit any society. Limiting access to social media platforms stifles free expression and hinders the flow of information. I urge the authorities to reconsider this decision and lift the ban. Let's work together for a more open and connected society.

What they don’t understand is that this fight is not about me, it is about our dignity, our rights and our freedoms. I am just the symbol of this just cause. The more they try to erase my images in my beautiful city, the more they will pop up everywhere, the most unlikely places — this time on the Bosphorus bridge. #imamoglueverywhere

Today marks a pivotal moment not just for #Istanbul, but for #democracy itself. As we celebrate our victory, we send a resounding message to the world: the decline of democracy ends now. Istanbul stands as a beacon of hope, a testament to the resilience of democratic values in the face of rising authoritarianism. Our triumph echoes the spirit of our Republic's founding by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, inspiring those under oppressive regimes with a vision of freedom and equality. Istanbulites, we are not just citizens of this historic city; we are guardians of democracy, leading the way for nations worldwide.

I’ve been unjustly imprisoned for 100 days. But let it be known: we are not backing down. Today in Saraçhane, we come together. Not in despair, but in determination. Against injustice, we raise our voices. For democracy, we stand side by side. The will of the people cannot be silenced. Our hope, our courage, our unity will prevail.

Millions of voters across Türkiye and abroad are rushing to the polls to my support in the CHP's presidential primary election. With overwhelming turnout, voting hours have been extended in key locations like Saraçhane until 08:30 PM, where citizens from all walks of life are casting their votes for democracy and solidarity. Voting began at 8:00 AM in 5,600 ballot boxes set up across 81 provinces and 973 districts. Voting was scheduled to end at 5:00 PM, but due to heavy turnout, it has been extended until 8:30 PM. In addition to 1.7 million CHP members, all citizens can vote at the "solidarity" ballot boxes.

Today, at the Eurocities 2025 General Assembly in Braga, Portugal, I was honored from afar with a very special recognition. This meaningful recognition for our commitment to the defence of democratic principles and values belongs not only to me, but to our brave young people who demand freedom, to our women marching for equality, and to the millions who, in silence or in solidarity, have never given up on democracy. I extend my deepest thanks to Mayor Ahmet Aras for accepting this recognition on my behalf and for inviting our fellow European mayors to visit Istanbul—a city that continues to stand for justice, dignity, and hope. From Braga to Istanbul, from Istanbul to the world—our voice for freedom and democracy cannot be silenced. ✊ #FreeImamoglu 🇪🇺 #Eurocities2025 🇹🇷 #ImamogluEverywhere

Progressive political parties from across Europe are gathering in Amsterdam for the PES Congress 2025, a landmark moment of unity, hope, and action for democracy. From my cell in Türkiye, I sent a message — delivered online by my wife Dr. Dilek İmamoğlu — to my fellow progressive mayors and leaders: “Our cities are bound together by a shared commitment to democracy. Attacks on democracy in Türkiye have reached a perilous stage. But manipulated courts cannot annul the will of the people. As progressive mayors, we must show that cities are fortresses of democracy and that fortress will hold.” Following my message, Mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri responded with a powerful call to action: “We cannot accept this. Let our voices be heard. Let us stand for democracy in Türkiye. Let us stand for Ekrem İmamoğlu.” I am deeply moved by the solidarity shown by European social democrats, and by my friend CHP Chairperson Özgür Özel, who joined others in a standing ovation. Watch my message and Mayor Gualtieri’s speech at the PES Congress 2025 in Amsterdam.

In Belgrade, at the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) Midterm Conference on “A Fair Deal for Workers in a Changing World,” my message was read aloud by EUROPEAN TRADE UNIONS Secretary General Esther Lynch during the Progressive Mayors panel. Though I have been unjustly held in Silivri Prison for nearly two months due to politically motivated charges, I remain deeply committed to sharing Istanbul’s story — and standing up for democracy, dignity, and social justice. In my message, I spoke about the Istanbul Model: green transformation, inclusive services, transparent governance, and strong citizen participation. We believe that local governments are the last line of defense for democracy — and we must lead with courage. Let’s keep building bridges — city to city, citizen to citizen — for a more just and livable world. #Democracy #Solidarity #IstanbulModel #ETUC2025

From Silivri prison, I listened to the voices of European mayors representing Eurocities and #B40 Balkan Cities Network who gathered in Saraçhane to stand with #Istanbul and with all unlawfully arrested mayors in #Türkiye. Their words echo far beyond prison walls. I sincerely thank each of them. Their voices prove that our struggle is not only Türkiye’s struggle—it belongs to all who believe in democracy, freedom, and human dignity. Barcelona 🇪🇸 – Jaume Collboni : “Cities do matter. We stand together for democracy.” 1/9

To all my fellow citizens, friends, brothers and sisters living in Europe, I know that part of your heart and mind is always here in Türkiye. Believe me, ours is always with you too. Because this country is not just defined by borders. It is held together by faith, by love, and by hope. I know that my voice reaches the heart of Europe and resonates in yours. In these difficult times we are guided by three words, democracy, justice and courage. These values support and strengthen one another. Today we must go beyond raising our voices for democracy and justice and find the courage to speak out when our democratic rights are stripped away and injustice takes hold. The European Union itself was built on this very courage, the courage of war-weary nations who came together to defend peace, freedom, and human dignity. And just like them, we too will hold on to one another, and with democracy, justice, and courage lighting our way, we will shape the future of Türkiye together.

Eurocities 🇪🇺 – André Sobczak : “We will follow up as long as it takes to make sure democracy and rule of law are respected in Türkiye.” André also conveyed the message of former Eurocities President and now MEP Dario Nardella : “There can be no freedom without respect for the vote. United cities stand in solidarity.” 9/9
