First four shloks of RigVed 10.125 are collectively called the Devi Suktam अ॒हं रु॒द्रेभि॒र्वसु॑भिश्चराम्य॒हमा॑दि॒त्यैरु॒त वि॒श्वदे॑वैः अ॒हं मि॒त्रावरु॑णो॒भा बि॑भर्म्य॒हमि॑न्द्रा॒ग्नी अ॒हम॒श्विनो॒भा he Rudras, the Vasus, the Adityas and the Vishvadevas are only my diverse maifestations; Both Mitra and Varuṇa, Agni and Indra, and the two Asvins are present in me. अ॒हं सोम॑माह॒नसं॑ बिभर्म्य॒हं त्वष्टा॑रमु॒त पू॒षणं॒ भग॑म् अ॒हं द॑धामि॒ द्रवि॑णं ह॒विष्म॑ते सुप्रा॒व्ये॒३॒॑ यज॑मानाय सुन्व॒ते The foe-destroying Somadeva, Tvasta, Pusa and Bhaga are present in me; I bestow wealth upon my devotees who offer the oblation (havis) in the sacrificial fire for the gods. अ॒हं राष्ट्री॑ सं॒गम॑नी॒ वसू॑नां चिकि॒तुषी॑ प्रथ॒मा य॒ज्ञिया॑नाम् तां मा॑ दे॒वा व्य॑दधुः पुरु॒त्रा भूरि॑स्थात्रां॒ भूर्या॑वे॒शय॑न्तीम् I am the sovereign queen of the whole universe, the giver of wealth. I am worshipped in many places or in all parts of the universe. मया॒ सो अन्न॑मत्ति॒ यो वि॒पश्य॑ति॒ यः प्राणि॑ति॒ य ईं॑ शृ॒णोत्यु॒क्तम् अ॒म॒न्तवो॒ मां त उप॑ क्षियन्ति श्रु॒धि श्रु॑त श्रद्धि॒वं ते॑ वदामि Everyone’s food, sight, hearing, living and whatever is said are possible only through my strength. He who does not know me, becomes poor, inferior and weak. O dear one! listen to me, I am telling you about the absolute thing that is gained by respect and devotion. ---- Devi Suktam was composed by Rishika Vagambhrnige. Her name was Vak, and she was the daughter of the sage, Ambhrna. Unlike other chants, this hymn is not directed to any god. Instead, the hymn celebrates herself, or rather, her divine Self. She writes not as a mere mortal but as an illumined soul, as someone who has realised Oneness with the Universal. She has experienced aham brahmasmi, (or, I am Brahman) and now wholly identifies herself as the Supreme Self.
