This Indiana Dental Board meeting gets pretty wild when they start discussing foreign-trained dentists applying to become dental hygienists. I posted the time stamps so you know where to look. ⏱️ 3:24–3:28: They debate whether foreign BDS degrees actually meet Indiana’s requirement for education “substantially similar” to a DDS/DMD. ⏱️ 3:36–3:47: Then they start digging into the transcripts. One member points out missing periodontics (gum disease), preventive dentistry and radiology, a 1.95 GPA, and one applicant who apparently had only 20 days of perio training. The concern? “I just worry about the safety, the preparedness.” ⏱️ 3:33–3:35: They also realize applicants could spend nearly $2,000 on exams before the board even decides whether their education qualifies them. ⏱️ 3:48–3:52: Then they get into immigration and criminal background checks. ⏱️ 3:52–3:59: They settle on reviewing applications individually because they're apparently getting them from all over the world. And then someone suggests sending the applications 10–20 at a time instead of 100 right before a meeting. At one point, they joke about needing sleeping bags for how many applications they are getting. And someone later admits they were scrolling through some transcripts thinking: "Yeah, because some of these I had a hard time just trying to find the English part of the transcript. More ICE videos are coming out of Indianapolis. Sources tell me federal officers are working across Indiana and Ohio as part of an immigration enforcement sweep. Reports include: • Targeted individuals • Collateral arrests • Semi-truck drivers ALL OF INDIANA IS IN PLAY. I expect social media to be flooded with reports/videos of detentions, spouses scrambling to find immigration attorneys, and tow trucks dealing with abandoned cars and semi-trucks. This appears to be a significant operation.

I love scrolling through Instagram on Sunday mornings. "5 Miles-long Khalistan Car Rally in Indianapolis, promoting the upcoming Khalistan Referendum vote on August 16, where participants will cast ballots on the question of seceding from the Indian Union." Zero regard for traffic or other people on the highway. This is a major safety issue and nothing happened. Take a look at this guy's Reels page. It's packed with videos of these same kinds of antics. IDK who this guy is, but he nailed it. He told the council that if this tax passes, it's permanent and likely the lowest it will ever be. Before asking taxpayers for another $50 million, he argued the city should first take a hard look at its own spending. He questioned why MILLIONS are being spent on landscaping contracts instead of exploring lower-cost alternatives like inmate labor. He criticized spending on the city's DEI office, argued taxpayers are already subsidizing bike lanes, walking trails, bus routes, and road projects, and asked why drivers should now pay even more. He also pointed to Marion County's reported audit issues involving missing federal funds, saying the county should demonstrate it can properly manage existing money before asking residents for additional tax dollars. His closing point summed up his argument: instead of pushing what he described as roughly an 80% increase in vehicle-related taxes, the city should go through the budget line by line, cut unnecessary spending, and prove it has exhausted every other option before reaching deeper into taxpayers' pockets.

There is some whacky stuff going on in Greenwood. At a Festival Country Indiana meeting (the Johnson County Convention, Visitor & Tourism Board) they approved a $100,000 grant to Old Town Greenwood, Inc., a private nonprofit, so it can buy artwork from an international artist in São Paulo Why not have the tourism board sign the contract? Their attorney said the State Board of Accounts doesn't like taxpayer dollars being sent overseas before the artwork is received. So the workaround: Festival Country Indiana → $100K grant → Old Town Greenwood → International artist Festival Country still handles -shipping -insurance -assumes the costs and risks -ultimately owns the artwork. And the attorney recommending this workaround is a former state representative. Taxpayer money is still going overseas. They just put a private entity in the middle to get around the SBOA concerns. Like I said.....There is some seriously whacky stuff going on in Greenwood. Why aren't they using local artists?

This is a WILD conversation that happened at the State Budget Agency meeting yesterday. DNR asked for $2.2 million for two pool slides — $1.1 million each. Sen. Chris Garten pushed back HARD. He asked what taxpayers are actually getting for $1.1 million. DNR said the slide itself is about $350,000, with the rest going toward installation, steel infrastructure and labor. Garten said he asked “the amazing technology called the Internet” to find the most expensive commercial slide it could find. It came back with a 72-foot commercial slide for $133,800. DNR explained that the expensive part isn’t necessarily the slide itself. It’s the steel infrastructure, which has to withstand the corrosive effects of chlorine. Garten questioned how they arrived at the $1.1 million figure and whether it had been bid out. DNR said they had engineering estimates. Then Rep. Ed DeLaney stepped in and began making the case for the expense. It was established that labor is about 50% of the cost and that the park has lost about $71,000 in direct revenue because the slide is out of service. Delaney also pointed out that private concessionaires make money selling things like candy to the kids, and asked whether the park has seen fewer people coming through the gate because the attraction is gone. DNR said there had been a reduction in gate revenue, although they don’t specifically track how much of that decline is attributable to the missing slide. DNR said they expect the new slide to have about a 10-year payback. Then Garten came back with the question that really puts this in perspective: “How fast would the payback be if we bought a 72-foot slide that’s half the price?” DNR’s answer? “Five years or less.” So taxpayers are being asked to spend $2.2 MILLION on two pool slides. And Garten’s basic question was pretty simple: Do these slides really need to cost $1.1 million each?

Avon Schools: “The state eliminated textbook fees, costing us $300K a year.” So Avon is bringing back fees: Elementary: $12–$14 Middle: $11–$53 High school: ~$26 per course But wait, there’s more! They’re also asking parents to join their Oriole Advocates group to lobby legislators for MORE funding. So the solution to not having enough taxpayer money is apparently… ask taxpayers for more money, then ask them to lobby for even more money. Awon W

The video of Lt. Governor Micah Beckwith sent to the Save Heritage Indiana Gregory K Bovino event. He starts off with “Immigration has been used as a catalyst to destroy our values as Americans and really as Hoosiers.” From there, Beckwith talks about Temporary Protected Status, the Biden administration’s immigration policies and what he believes has been a failure to enforce America’s immigration laws. He argues that immigration should be about assimilation into American culture, not changing American culture to accommodate foreign cultures. He also says he is “against multiculturalism,” while making the distinction that people of different ethnic backgrounds can live together under one American culture. In a nutshell, his message is this: Know your values. Speak the hard truths. Teach the next generation. Defend what makes America and Indiana worth preserving.

Merrillville, Indiana is becoming a major hub for the Sikh community in the Midwest, and a new $10 million Gurdwara Sahib is the latest sign of that growth. According to organizers, the project is one of the largest Sikh religious centers in the Midwest, sitting on 20 acres with a 15,000 square foot building and a 150-foot elevation. They say the goal is to create a place that resembles the grand Gurdwaras found in India while serving as a spiritual, cultural, and community hub for generations. .Governor Mike Braun was just asked about the Chicago Bears at the ceremonial signing of SB76 He says the Chicago Bears spent years waiting for action from Chicago and Illinois leaders and got little to show for it. Indiana, he says, moved quickly and made a competitive offer. Braun's message to the Bears: Where do you want to spend the next 50 years? In Indiana, with a AAA credit rating, a business-friendly environment, lower taxes, and the ability to build more stadium for the same investment.....or in Illinois, where negotiations have dragged on for years? Braun says Illinois' inability to get a deal done "tells the whole story" and suggests a formal Bears announcement could come sooner rather than later.

Noblesville Schools has a spending problem. They are ok with giving their superintendent, Dan Hile, a $60k raise over 3 years while still asking the taxpayers to fork over more cash, Let's not forget about the high schools fancy new gym. I hope this referendum gets defeated.

Looks like Plainfield may finally have some competition for the title of Indiana's largest mosque. The Geist Community Center says its goal is to establish a "family-friendly" mosque and community center to serve the growing Muslim community in the greater Geist area, including Eastern Fishers, McCordsville, Fortville, Pendleton, and Lawrence. According to its project brochure, the project will be built in three phases: Phase I • 2,500 sq. ft. prayer hall • Prayer areas for men and women • Wudu facilities • 30-50 parking spaces • Basketball court • Kids play area • Picnic shelter Phase II • Gym • Main building • Multi-use community center Phase III • Elderly condos Elderly condos? That's sounds familiar.

Well, it looks like the wheel tax wasn’t needed to get the state money. It was additional money on top of a plan that already met the match requirements. Last week, the Indy City Council’s Public Works Committee met to discuss the budget, and Proposal 192, the plan to raise the wheel and excise taxes, came up. Councilor Crista Wells asked DPW if the funding plan was essentially the plan to meet the requirements of SEA 179 and receive the state match, notwithstanding the wheel tax proposal. DPW’s answer was simple: Correct. Then Councilor Brian Mowery followed up and asked DPW to make it clear for everyone watching that the plan does not include a tax hike to receive the state match. DPW’s response: “We could have satisfied the match requirements with this plan here alone.” DPW says the $50 million annually is already included in its five year capital plan through existing revenue sources. Translation: The city already had a funding plan to meet the state’s matching requirements. The tax increase wasn’t necessary to unlock the state money. It was additional revenue on top of the funding the city had already planned for its capital program. Remember all of this next year when all of the Councilors that voted YES to raise the wheel & excise tax run for re-election next year. Also, well done by Brian Mowery to remind Kristin Jones he has the floor.
