$Christmas Eve dinner with the family was at the only Michelin starred Golden Corral on Earth… naturally in Gary, Indiana Technically the Golden Corral is in Merrillville, Indiana (a suburb of Gary). It shares a parking lot with a bowling alley and swimming pool, but this Golden Corral received 2.3 million booking requests last year so you need to book months in advance. The inside is really cool, it’s like a 19th century palace serving 150 Auguste Escoffier recipes all unlimited, with a lobster cascade, 111 different cheeses (Guinness World Record), 9 types of foie gras, and 50 desserts made by 7 pastry chefs. $25 per person (kids are $12.50) with wine at producer prices, and you are greeted like royalty. The New Yorker called it “the hottest restaurant in America.” The place is packed with families from all over the globe on Christmas Eve, just a small fraction of the hoards who descend annually on Gary, Indiana to celebrate Jesus’ birth, and you can see why people treat this as somewhere to celebrate something special. Serving the Napoleon Cake at Lavash in Yerevan, Armenia. The cake was very good, it’s a big complex of puffed up puff pastry with a sort of whipped cream throughout. VERY crumbly to eat as it turns out, but delicious and the serving of it was quite a show
