Amodei says Coxon also called Anthropic the most responsible of the major players, and that the company is "talking to government officials every day." "He was calling out, honestly, the same thing that I'm calling out, which is the difficulty of the situation, the structural difficulty of the situation that we're all in, and that the plan that I've put out is designed to help us address... We are talking to government officials every day, in the Commerce Department... in the intelligence community, to tell them as much as we can what we know."

DARIO AMODEI WAS ASKED IF SLOWING DOWN AI IS A GOOD IDEA WHEN CHINA WON'T He called it "the toughest dilemma," said it is not about commercial competition, and pointed to chips. "We can slow down within the margin, within the envelope that we have, particularly if we don't sell chips to authoritarian countries, and if we do more to help our own security so that our technology is not stolen. I believe that will buy us at least a little time."

SAM ALTMAN SAYS OPENAI HAS PAUSED TRAINING RUNS FOR SAFETY WORK AND WILL DO MORE OF IT "We've talked in the last couple of months about pausing runs as we get to these new levels of capabilities to make more safety and alignment progress. We will do more of that going forward." He says the industry needs to come together, and ideally international governments too. SAM ALTMAN WAS JUST ASKED IF OPENAI'S HUMANOID ROBOT IS STILL ON TRACK FOR 2027 He thinks everything in bio and material science is about to be transformed, along with software that gets built on the fly for whatever you need, cybersecurity, and new kinds of energy, where he said we could see "a real renaissance." On the robot, he's sticking with 2027 for a demo but not for anything walking around. "I think we'll have a cool demo in 2027, like a great demo. I don't think that there will be like robots walking the streets for a few years longer, but we'll have something impressive."

ANTHROPIC WILL LET OUTSIDE EVALUATORS OBSERVE ITS MODELS BEING TRAINED AND RUN, AND DARIO AMODEI WANTS THE WHOLE INDUSTRY TO DO THE SAME Asked whether slowing down means Anthropic will stop releasing more advanced models: "It doesn't mean that." He says the evaluators may end up setting the "speed limit." "The first step is that we put in place embedded evaluators, embedded external evaluators from a third-party nonprofit or perhaps someday government organization, that can observe the process of us training and running our models... I want this to be done across the industry so that whenever anyone builds an AI model, there's a third-party evaluator who understands the best safety practices, who can verify whether that company is following the safety practices that they're committed to. It's like a food inspector."

His message to anyone at home using Claude or ChatGPT: "I won't lie to you. There are real dangers. And I think, for too long, the industry lied to people about the fact that this technology had risks. The idea was that they would present it as positive. We've never done that, but too much of the industry did that. And so it starts with telling the truth. And the truth is, there are risks. Risks are real."

DARIO AMODEI WAS ASKED IF THERE'S A GROUP CHAT COMING AFTER ELON MUSK AND SAM ALTMAN SAID THEY AGREE WITH HIS PLAN TO SLOW DOWN His next steps: rival labs agree to third-party evaluators, then joint safety standards for releases, possibly on the pace of releases, with the government in the room. "I'm enormously appreciative that other industry leaders, including our competitors, have offered their agreement with this plan. I think the next step is for multiple industry players to also agree to have third-party evaluators. Then I think the next step after that is, in some form, the companies need to work together to set standards about safety standards for release, perhaps something about the pace of release. But in order to do that, there needs to be involvement of the government."
