The Aam Aadmi Party had claimed that justice in the sacrilege cases would be delivered within 24 hours of forming the government. However, instead of ensuring exemplary punishment in the 2015 incidents, a draft of a new law was introduced and sent to a Select Committee, and the matter was effectively pushed into cold storage. A government that has failed to advance the process of justice for four years is today using police force against Sikh congregations who are demanding justice. Since 2015, Sikh sentiments have been deeply hurt, yet accountability has not been clearly established. In view of the demand being raised in Samana, the Bhagwant Mann government should include justice in the sacrilege cases and concrete legal steps in the agenda of the Legislative Assembly session beginning on March 6. Instead of forcibly dispersing the congregations’ protest with police action, the government should prioritize the sacrilege cases and respect the sentiments of the Sikh community.

In the context of the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty, the demand made by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to the central government for priority-based use of water to meet his state’s needs is entirely justified and reasonable. Similarly, Punjab, being a riparian state, has the full right to first utilize its river waters to fulfill all of its own requirements, including agriculture. Only after that should the right be granted to levy charges or compensation on the water supplied to non-riparian states.
