Bill C-22 creates a front door, not a back door, to Canadian's data, and it gives the keys to the government and does so in secret. These are just some of the reasons I opposed Bill C-22 today, at least in it's current form. Watch below. My thanks to David T.S. Fraser, Michael Geist, Robert Diab, the CCF and others for their analysis and advocacy which greatly informed my remarks. I remain open to reviewing and considering proposals for lawful access.

Canadians mail should not be accessed without a warrant. Canadians should not be kicked off the internet without due process. Canadians should not be threated with unprecedented police powers to suppress speech online. But for every societal problem, the Liberals' first instinct is to erode the freedoms of Canadians. Thank you to the many residents of York-Durham who have written to me about this. I will keep fighting against the kinds of attacks on personal freedom the government has introduced in Bills C-2, C-8, and C-9.

While a Prime Minister needs to travel, Canadians expect him to make real progress when he does. Unfortunately, the "deals" so far have mostly been promises for the future, not solutions for today. Most troubling, we have little information on any progress with the United States, the single most important deal he needs to secure. All we know is that there are no active negotiations.

I presented a petition today from residents in our community, calling on the government to withdraw Bill C-9, their controversial censorship proposal that targets faith communities across Canada and that may criminalize passages from the Bible and other religious texts. Today, the Liberals, with the help of the Bloc, are moving to end debate on this proposal and silence the many voices of concerned Canadians.
